Kentucky Targets JUCO Quarterback With Rising Reputation in Texas

With quarterback depth now a priority, Kentucky has turned its attention to JUCO standout Tre Guerra as a potential solution behind center.

Kentucky Eyes JUCO QB Tre Guerra as Potential Backup Option

With spring ball on the horizon and roster depth always top of mind, Kentucky is looking to shore up its quarterback room - and a new name has emerged in that search. Tre Guerra, a JUCO signal-caller out of Tyler Junior College in Texas, has recently been in contact with the Wildcats’ staff, including head coach Will Stein.

Guerra, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound quarterback, began his college career at Central Arkansas before transferring to Tyler ahead of the 2025 season. He’s a 2023 graduate of Keller High School in Texas and has now put together two seasons of college ball, with his most recent campaign catching the attention of programs like Kentucky.

The Wildcats are set to return their starting quarterback, Cutter Boley, next season - a promising young talent who’s expected to lead the offense. But behind him, the depth chart is a bit thinner than ideal.

Currently, Brennen Ward and Matt Ponatoski are the only other scholarship quarterbacks on the 2026 roster. Kentucky also lost Stone Saunders to the transfer portal this offseason, leaving a clear opportunity for someone like Guerra to come in and compete for the backup role.

Breaking Down Guerra’s Game

Guerra’s 2025 season at Tyler Junior College was a productive one. He completed 216 of 347 passes, throwing for 2,811 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.

That’s a solid workload and shows he was trusted to run the offense consistently. The numbers also reflect a quarterback who’s willing to push the ball downfield, even if it comes with some risk.

The year prior, in 2024, Guerra posted more modest numbers: 74-of-121 passing for 999 yards, five touchdowns, and two picks. It was a smaller sample size, but it laid the groundwork for his breakout this past season.

While Guerra isn’t currently ranked by Rivals or the Rivals Industry Ranking, 247Sports has him pegged as the No. 2 JUCO quarterback in the country and the No. 123 overall JUCO prospect. That’s not nothing - especially in a year where experienced, game-ready quarterbacks are in high demand across college football.

What This Means for Kentucky

For Kentucky, the potential addition of Guerra would be about stability and competition. With Boley entrenched as the starter, the staff isn’t necessarily looking for someone to come in and shake up the top of the depth chart. But having a reliable, experienced backup who’s taken meaningful snaps - and thrown for nearly 3,000 yards in a season - is a luxury many teams don’t have.

It’s also a smart move from a roster management standpoint. Injuries happen.

Development isn’t always linear. And in today’s transfer-heavy landscape, having options in the quarterback room is critical.

Guerra brings that, along with a live arm and a year of high-volume production under his belt.

The Wildcats are doing their homework here, and Guerra looks like a player who could provide valuable depth - and maybe more - in Lexington.
