What a difference nine days can make in college basketball. Just over a week ago, the Kentucky Wildcats were eyeing the top spot in the SEC. Fast forward, and they're now grappling with a three-game skid, fighting to keep their March Madness dreams alive.
Here's a snapshot of the SEC standings as of Monday, Feb. 23:
- Florida Gators: 12-2 SEC (21-6 Overall)
- Alabama Crimson Tide: 10-4 SEC (20-7 Overall)
- Arkansas Razorbacks: 10-4 SEC (20-7 Overall)
- Tennessee Volunteers: 10-4 SEC (20-7 Overall)
- Texas A&M Aggies: 9-5 SEC (19-8 Overall)
- Vanderbilt Commodores: 8-6 SEC (21-6 Overall)
- Missouri Tigers: 8-6 SEC (18-9 Overall)
- Kentucky Wildcats: 8-6 SEC (17-10 Overall)
- Texas Longhorns: 8-6 SEC (17-10 Overall)
- Georgia Bulldogs: 7-7 SEC (19-8 Overall)
- Auburn Tigers: 6-8 SEC (15-12 Overall)
- Mississippi State Bulldogs: 5-9 SEC (13-14 Overall)
- Oklahoma Sooners: 3-11 SEC (13-14 Overall)
- South Carolina Gamecocks: 3-11 SEC (12-15 Overall)
- Ole Miss Rebels: 3-11 SEC (11-16 Overall)
- LSU Tigers: 2-12 SEC (14-13 Overall)
With the SEC Tournament looming, Kentucky finds itself as the No. 8 seed if the season ended today. This position grants them a first-round bye, thanks to a tiebreaker win over Texas.
They'd face the winner of the No. 9 Texas and No.
16 LSU matchup. Kentucky edged out Texas earlier this season and narrowly escaped LSU with a last-second miracle.
Winning that game would set up a showdown with the top-seeded Florida Gators. Not exactly a comforting thought, but that's the reality for the Wildcats.
With four games left, the stakes are high. If Kentucky drops three of these, they could tumble to 12th in the standings, forcing them into a Wednesday matchup and a precarious position for an at-large NCAA bid. They'd likely need two or three wins to keep their tournament hopes alive.
The Wildcats have no one to blame but themselves. It's a critical juncture, and they'll need to reflect and regroup if they want to dance in March.
