Kentucky Seniors Get Emotional As Final Goodbye Nears

Kentucky's departing seniors reflect on a season of resilience and camaraderie, leaving a lasting legacy under Coach Brooks leadership.

Kentucky's season wrapped up with a tough 76-54 loss to Texas in the Sweet 16, marking the end of the line for five standout seniors: Tonie Morgan, Teonni Key, Amelia Hassett, Jordan Obi, and Josie Gilvin. This group has left an indelible mark on the program, and their reflections after the game showed just how meaningful their journey has been.

Tonie Morgan, despite only spending a year in Lexington, made a significant impact. She stepped up as a key player, bridging the gap between Georgia Amoore and Maddyn Greenway, and earned her place among Kentucky's great point guards.

Reflecting on the season, Morgan said, “This was a great year. We’re not going to hang our heads.

We made it to the Sweet 16. Is that where we wanted to end?

No, but we stayed together through all the ups and downs. I couldn’t be happier to do it with this group.”

Amelia Hassett, known for her sharpshooting, set a single-season program record with 99 threes. Her versatility on the court, whether defending the opponent's best player or crashing the boards, made her an invaluable asset. Coach Kenny Brooks even dubbed her Kentucky’s “unsung hero,” highlighting her contributions beyond just scoring.

Teonni Key echoed the sentiment of camaraderie and resilience, saying, “It’s definitely going to be hard to say bye, but the foundation we laid in Kentucky, the life we brought back into women’s basketball here, was unmatched.” Key expressed optimism about the future, crediting Coach Brooks and his staff for their pivotal roles in revitalizing the program. “This is honestly just the floor,” she noted, looking forward to the continued growth of Kentucky women’s basketball.

As these seniors move on, their legacy remains. They’ve been instrumental in setting the stage for Coach Brooks’ era at Kentucky, and while their time on the court has ended, their contributions will be celebrated by Big Blue Nation for years to come.
