Kentucky’s first fall camp under Will Stein opens Thursday, Aug. 6, and the Wildcats are already dealing with a handful of players who won’t be ready to jump in right away.
Stein said Tuesday that five players are expected to miss the start of camp while they continue working back from injuries. The list includes three transfers and two returning defenders.
Among the newcomers, former LSU wide receiver Nic Anderson is still easing back into full-speed work.
"He's working back into full speed work," Stein said. "He had a really good summer."
Stein said the same is true for Oklahoma running back transfer Jovontae Barnes, who is also not expected to be available at the outset of camp. Former Ohio State offensive lineman Tegra Tshabola is dealing with a different situation after having a "minor procedure" and should "be back within the next week or so."
The two returners expected to sit out the beginning of camp are both on defense. Defensive back Jaden Smith is in the "same category" as Anderson and Barnes, according to Stein.
Linebacker Sam Greene is the final player Stein singled out, and the coach sounded upbeat about where he stands in his recovery.
"[Greene] is looking great," Stein said. "Really expecting him to be a factor for us on defense this year."
Kentucky enters camp with a rebuilt roster that includes 29 transfer additions, many of whom are expected to play major roles when the Wildcats open the season Sept. 5 at Kroger Field against Youngstown State.

The first real public tune-up for Kentucky footballs new era came this week in Lexington, where Will Stein and several of his assistants and players met with local media at the teams Media Day before the season opener against Youngstown State. Stein, who took over the program last December, is now the face of a reset that has been months in the making, and this was a chance for everyone around the program to start putting names and voices to the changes.
