Ousmane N’Diaye spent Thursday morning doing something a little outside his usual lane at Kentucky: lining up a kick at Kroger Field.
Mark Pope asked the 7-footer to test his feet with an American twist as the Wildcats went through morning conditioning ahead of Will Stein’s coaching debut on Saturday. Pope put a helmet on N’Diaye and sent him toward a football, while head strength coach Randy Towner made the challenge matter for the whole group - make the kick and the team would knock a round off conditioning. Miss, and everyone would have to finish the full schedule in the heat.
“I’m feeling good, man. This is my first time wearing a helmet,” he said, smacking his dome on both sides. “I’m excited.”
N’Diaye, who is left-footed despite being a right-handed shooter, came up just short on his first try, sending the ball under the crossbar by a hair. Towner gave him one more shot, and N’Diaye delivered for his teammates, drilling a line drive that went left and cleared the bar.
The moment was part of Kentucky’s morning work at the football stadium, and it also raised at least a half-joking question about whether the Wildcats ought to consider him for more than basketball. Jacob Kauwe is injured going into Week 1, Adam Zouagui is set to start at kicker against Youngstown State, and N’Diaye would bring a different kind of profile to the job. He’d also be the tallest kicker in college football or NFL history; the previous record was 6-9.
The football-field workout also fit neatly with the team’s “eat what you kill” theme, which was still showing up in the extra footage the UK Sports Video team released after conditioning ended. That clip centered on Zoom Diallo, who embraced the message in his own way.
“We’re working - and we’re doing extra. We don’t stop,” he said.
“We can’t, we gotta keep going. No excuses, nobody is going to wait for us.
We just gotta keep going. Eat what you kill, shorty!”
With Kentucky football now just two sleeps away, and Big Blue Madness less than a month out, the Wildcats are moving through a busy stretch with both programs sharing the spotlight.
