In a tough showdown at Bridgestone Arena, Kentucky men's basketball faced a formidable challenge against No. 1 seed Florida, falling 71-63 in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals. This loss marked the third defeat to the Gators this season and added another chapter to the Wildcats’ recent struggles in the SEC Tournament under head coach Mark Pope, whose record now stands at 3-2 in these high-stakes games.
Despite the setback, Kentucky had bright spots with three players scoring in double figures. Denzel Aberdeen led the charge with 17 points, followed by Mouhamed Dioubate's 14 and Otega Oweh's 10.
The Wildcats initially found themselves in a familiar position, trailing by double digits. However, back-to-back threes from Dioubate sparked a rally, tying the game at 20.
Yet, despite their efforts, Kentucky never managed to seize the lead against Florida.
The Gators responded with a decisive 13-0 run, sending Kentucky into halftime down by nine. The Wildcats’ shooting woes were evident, going 10-30 from the field and a mere 2-11 from beyond the arc in the first half, with Dioubate's threes being the only highlights from deep.
Things didn't improve much after the break, as Kentucky was outscored 8-4 early in the second half. The Wildcats faced a daunting 17-point deficit in the third quarter but showed resilience, cutting the gap to as close as 11. With under four minutes left, a surge fueled by Aberdeen's deep ball and Collin Chandler's clutch free throws brought them within five points.
Malachi Moreno summed up the team's fighting spirit: "We know that we're not going to quit. Early in the season, when we got down big, we would kind of stop playing.
We showed a lot of grit this week. We played to the final buzzer.
Today, the buzzer just sounded a little too quickly for us."
Ultimately, Kentucky's shooting struggles (21-59 from the field and 5-23 from three) and foul troubles were too much to overcome. The Wildcats also struggled on the boards, being out-rebounded 50-29, including an 18-8 deficit on the offensive glass. Chandler fouled out with just over two minutes left, and Dioubate followed with seconds remaining.
Florida's Alex Condon was a standout performer, posting 22 points and capitalizing on eight free throws, while Thomas Haugh added 13 points to help seal the victory.
Reflecting on the game, Coach Pope acknowledged the challenges: "I thought our guys, we didn't play well. We couldn't make a shot.
We couldn't grab a rebound. But I thought our guys, even though we didn't play well, you can sense your team as they're just grinding away.
It bodes well. If we can carry that with us, we have a chance.
We'll play way better than this. We'll play so much better than this.
I have no doubt."
With their SEC Tournament run over, Kentucky now turns its focus to the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats will be watching closely on Selection Sunday to see where their journey continues.
The anticipation builds as the 2026 NCAA Selection Show airs live at 6 p.m. ET on March 15, offering a new opportunity for redemption on the national stage.
