Will Stein may have called South Alabama the best team in the Sun Belt, and whether that holds up is up for debate. What isn’t up for debate is this: the Jaguars have been excellent at keeping the football.
South Alabama has played three games and has not committed a turnover. That puts the Jaguars among just 12 teams nationwide without a giveaway, and their four takeaways have helped them climb to 12th in turnover margin. The defense has already produced three interceptions and a fumble recovery.
That ball-security battle is a big part of the story heading into Saturday, especially with Kentucky’s season already shaped by turnovers. The Wildcats stayed clean in wins over Youngstown State and Texas A&M, but they gave the ball away three times in the loss to Alabama.
Kentucky’s defense and special teams, though, have also been forcing mistakes. Through three games, the Wildcats have generated six turnovers, including four interceptions.
Against Alabama, Mi’Quise Humphrey-Grace delivered a highlight-reel defensive touchdown early and gave Kentucky its first defensive score of the season. Then at Texas A&M, the takeaways kept coming.
Sam Greene picked off Marcel Reed in the first half to shut down an A&M drive in Kentucky territory, and Jordan Castell intercepted Reed again in the fourth quarter to help finish off the upset. Kentucky almost had another on the opening kickoff, recovering what looked like a fumble before the call was overturned.
South Alabama, by contrast, has not handed out those kinds of momentum swings. And when the Jaguars do have the ball, they keep it moving. Through three games, South Alabama has averaged 36:46 in time of possession and has run 228 offensive plays to just 147 for its opponents.
Kentucky, meanwhile, has lost the time-of-possession battle in all three of its games this season.
So the setup is clear: South Alabama protects the football, holds onto it, and forces opponents to wait. Kentucky’s defense will try to change that on Saturday.
