Kentucky basketball has spent the last several seasons living in a different SEC reality, and that’s exactly why another conference title needs to be on the table again.
The old days, when the Wildcats could expect to steamroll the league, are gone. The SEC has turned into a much deeper, more competitive basketball conference, and Kentucky is getting pushed harder than it used to.
That part is good. But the flip side is impossible to ignore: the Wildcats have gone too long without bringing home any SEC hardware.
Kentucky’s last SEC regular-season title came in 2020. Its last SEC Tournament championship came in 2018.
There’s also the lingering what-if from 2020, when the tournament was canceled by COVID and Kentucky never got the chance to see whether it would have won it all. Since then, nothing.
That drought hasn’t been limited to Mark Pope’s tenure, of course. A lot of it came during the John Calipari years. Still, the bottom line is the same: Kentucky fans are used to collecting conference trophies, and it has been a long wait for another one.
Some people look at Florida and assume the Gators make an SEC title out of reach for Kentucky this season. Florida is expected to be very good, no doubt about that.
But this program is not supposed to adjust its standards because the league got tougher. The expectation in Lexington should still be to battle for the SEC, then make a run in March.
And if that standard ever slips, that would be a bad sign for BBN.
I don’t think this Kentucky team is better than Florida. But the SEC is going to beat up on everybody, and the Wildcats will get their shot, including the trip to Gainesville. The bigger picture is clear enough: Coach Pope, his staff, his players and this fanbase are all chasing National Title #9, but getting back to the top of the SEC would be a welcome step on the way there.
This league has plenty of strong coaches and the SEC is in a great spot right now. Even so, Kentucky has to reclaim its place as the conference’s top program before it can truly call itself the top dog in college basketball again.
