Kentucky is making a late push for one of the top wings in the 2027 class, and the timing could hardly be more interesting.
On Tuesday night, AJ Williams announced that he had received an offer from Mark Pope and the Wildcats, adding another heavyweight to a recruitment that already appears to be moving toward a conclusion. Williams posted, “Blessed to receive an offer from the University of Kentucky,” on social media.
That offer comes as talk around Williams suggests a decision may be close. One school has been separating itself recently, and Kentucky is now trying to get into the mix as the recruitment reaches its final stretch. Williams was previously ranked in the 2028 class as the top prospect before making the jump to 2027.
Kentucky still has work to do if it wants to become a real threat here. BYU is viewed as the leader heading into the final stages, while Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, North Carolina, Georgia and Duke remain involved. For now, BYU looks like the team to beat.
Williams brings plenty to like on the floor. Rivals’ Jamie Shaw describes him as a player with “a mature approach to the game,” pointing to his 6-foot-7 frame, length and athleticism.
Shaw also called him “a shot-maker” who can score from multiple levels, finish plays and stay steady without needing to be flashy. He added that Williams rebounded in his area and was second in minutes and third in scoring for last summer’s U16 USA Basketball team.
Williams also flashed that production on the international stage. In a win over Japan at the FIBA U17 World Cup, he posted 25 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals, shooting 7-10 from the field, 5-6 from 3-point range and 6-6 at the line in 15 minutes.
Now Kentucky is hoping it got in at the right time and can still make a move before Williams makes his choice.
