Will Stein is kicking off his first spring practice as Kentucky's head football coach with a clear focus: real, competitive football. He's emphasizing the importance of 11-on-11 play during this crucial development period, and he's wasting no time in getting his team ready.
Kentucky is set to utilize all 15 practice sessions, with plans for three intrasquad scrimmages over the next month. It's all happening at the Joe Craft Football Training Facility, where the Wildcats are gearing up for an intense spring.
Stein laid out the schedule, noting that after spring break, practices will ramp up with more competitive drills. "Traditionally, you have two scrimmages and then the spring game," Stein shared. "We’ll look and see, but three’s on the docket."
Flexibility is key, as Stein acknowledges that plans might shift based on practice outcomes and roster health. However, the goal remains to hold three scrimmages, culminating in a spring game at Kroger Field on April 18. For Stein, simulating a game-day atmosphere is crucial.
"The first opportunity is going to be Sept. 5th," Stein pointed out. "I don’t want our guys facing Youngstown State without having experienced the crowd, the PA announcer, all that. It’s what BBN deserves."
Speaking with KSR, Stein expressed confidence in the team's depth and health, which should allow them to fully engage in spring activities. The Wildcats are ready to make the most of their spring practice, with scrimmages lined up for Saturdays post-spring break and a traditional spring game to cap it off. Kentucky is healthy and eager to dive into tackle football, marking the start of a new chapter in the Bluegrass.
