Kentucky Could Get A Huge Defensive Boost At Tennessee

Kentucky's defensive hopes receive a boost as linebacker Sam Greene is likely to return for the pivotal matchup against Tennessee.

Kentucky may be getting a key piece back just in time for its trip to Tennessee.

Linebacker Sam Greene, who has missed time after hurting his left knee in the win at Oklahoma, is expected to return for the Nov. 7 matchup in Knoxville, according to Kentucky coach Will Stein. Greene sat out last week’s win over Vanderbilt, but Stein said Monday night on his radio show that the senior is trending in the right direction.

“Sam’s getting better every day,” Stein said. “We’re expecting him back.

He’s a ball player. He’s such a great guy.

He’s one of the captains of our team, so we’re hoping to get him back, full-go, by this next game.

“He’s a do-it-all player. He can set the edge, he can drop in pass defense, he can blitz. He’s a fantastic football player.”

That would be a welcome boost for Jay Bateman’s defense. Greene has been one of Kentucky’s most productive players this season, piling up 23 tackles with 14 solo stops, along with two tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and an interception in seven games.

Even more telling: his biggest production has come against SEC opponents. Greene has 20 tackles in conference play, with 13 solo tackles, and every one of his tackles for loss, sacks and his interception have come against league competition.

Kentucky heads to No. 16 Tennessee at 6:15 p.m.

Nov. 7 on ESPN. The Wildcats are likely to enter as at least a touchdown underdog, just as they were against Texas A&M, South Carolina and Oklahoma - games they won all three.

Kentucky Has A Real Shot At A Massive In-State Recruiting Win

Kentucky still has work to do in the 2028 race, but the Wildcats have positioned themselves as a legitimate player for Kellan Hall, the No. 1 overall prospect in the class. The in-state standout has trimmed his list to 12 finalists and is headed toward a decision that should draw plenty of attention, with his announcement set for the Under Armour All-American Game on Jan. 3.

Hall is also keeping the door open with a round of additional visits, including trips to Notre Dame, Tennessee and Ohio State. Recent stops at Kentucky and Georgia are part of the picture as well, and those visits, along with his recent performances, could end up shaping the final call in what looks like a wide-open finish. Kentuckys Playoff Path Suddenly Looks Vulnerable In Crowded SEC Race

The SEC race is already turning into the kind of year where one late stumble could rewrite everything, and Joel Klatts latest playoff read only adds to the noise around Kentuckys path. On FOX Sports, he floated the idea that a team like LSU could still land in the 2026 College Football Playoff with three losses, pointing to a league where several teams could finish 9-3 and leave the committee sorting through a crowded field rather than a clean hierarchy.

For Kentucky, that kind of scenario makes every conference game feel even heavier, because the Wildcats are not just chasing wins, they are trying to avoid getting buried by timing and tiebreakers in a race full of direct comparisons. Klatts projection had LSU beating Alabama and Tennessee in November while Kentucky dropped two games, a combination that would tilt the conversation toward Baton Rouge if the committee ends up weighing head-to-head results and who finishes hottest at the right moment. Kentucky Just Lost A Key 2027 Target At The Worst Spot

Kentuckys 2027 recruiting board took a hit with the news that Lewis Uvwo has committed to Providence, giving Bryan Hodgson a major win on the back line. The seven-foot center had been on Kentuckys radar for a while, and the Wildcats had already brought him to campus for a visit, which made him a real name to watch as the class began to take shape.

Now Kentucky has to pivot again in its search for size, and the attention has already shifted to another towering target. Sherif Millogo, a 7-foot-5 center with notable skills, remains a key name in the Wildcats 2027 efforts, and losing Uvwo only raises the importance of landing the next big man on their board.
