Kentucky opened the season with a win over Youngstown State, but three familiar names were in uniform without ever getting on the field.
Defensive backs Hasaan Sykes and Terhyon Nichols, along with offensive lineman Malachi Wood, dressed for Saturday’s opener and were available, yet the Wildcats kept all three on the sideline. The move pointed to some kind of injury situation, with Kentucky choosing to be cautious against an FCS opponent.
Sykes, a junior transfer from Western Carolina, arrived after two seasons with the Catamounts and has built up a solid resume. In 20 career games with 11 starts, he has 54 tackles, five pass breakups, three interceptions and a forced fumble. Last season at Western Carolina, he started 11 of 12 games and posted 49 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, five pass breakups and three interceptions.
Nichols is entering his junior year in Lexington and has already flashed in the secondary. He played in seven games with six starts in 2025 before an injury knocked him out for the final five games.
That season, he totaled 18 tackles, one tackle for loss, a team-high five pass breakups and a quarterback hurry. In 2024, he appeared in eight games and finished with 10 tackles and five pass breakups.
Wood, a senior from Richmond, Kentucky, has been part of 21 Kentucky games in his career. He played in 10 games in 2025, logged 43 snaps and graded at 100% on assignments. A year earlier, he earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Football Team and started the final five games of the season, including games against Auburn, Tennessee, Murray State, Texas and Louisville.
Kentucky managed fine without them overall, but the secondary clearly missed Sykes and Nichols at times. Beau Brungard had a productive afternoon, going 23 of 35 for 243 yards and a touchdown in roughly three quarters of work.
The Wildcats also leaned on a true freshman at corner, starting Isaiah McMillian even though he missed his senior season of high school because of injury. He was targeted often, and getting Sykes and Nichols back could make a real difference there.
Up front, Kentucky shuffled things around as Alabama transfer Olaus Alinen moved from guard to tackle and JUCO transfer Jordan Knox stepped into a starting role at guard after beginning the day as a backup. The line held up well in both the run game and pass protection.
With Will Stein beginning a new era as Kentucky’s head coach, the status of Sykes, Nichols and Wood will be something to watch closely as the Wildcats turn their attention to Alabama. All three were dressed for the opener, which at least leaves the door open for them to return soon.

For a program trying to build momentum under a new coach, the opener was a strong start, though the real test will come as defenses force this revamped attack to prove it can keep the same rhythm when the competition gets tougher. Kentucky Fans Heading To Kroger Field Need To Know This First
Fans heading to Kroger Field for Kentuckys matchup with Youngstown State had to navigate an early travel headache Saturday when Interstate 64 East near Shelbyville was temporarily shut down after a wreck. Detours were put in place for a time, and drivers were urged to find alternate routes if they were coming into Lexington from that direction.
The good news for anyone already making the trip is that the shutdown has since been lifted, and the weather in Lexington has also improved after morning thunderstorms rolled through the area. One of the clearer signs of progress is along the line and in the front seven, where Malachi Wood is expected to return after being held out by a calf bruise and Alex Afari is gradually being reintegrated into the team.
