Kentucky has a new face under center, and fans should get ready to welcome Kenny Minchey. The Nashville native, who spent three years at Notre Dame, has taken a unique path to Lexington.
After narrowly missing out on a starting spot for the 2025 season, Minchey entered the transfer portal, initially committing to Nebraska before a last-minute switch to the Wildcats. He admits the process was “a little weird,” but credits coaches like Joe Sloan and Will Stein for sealing the deal.
Minchey shared, “It was mainly the coaches, guys like Sloan and Stein, in terms of the quarterbacks they’ve coached and their quarterback development. The roster stability and the potential to bring in talent from the portal were also big draws.”
Accuracy is Key
Joe Sloan, Kentucky’s offensive coordinator, was persistent in recruiting Minchey, drawn by his pinpoint accuracy. So far, Minchey has met those expectations during spring practice.
Sloan praised Minchey, saying, “He’s had a really good two days. His tape showed his accuracy, and he’s been living up to it.
He’s got a great base and leadership demeanor. He’s handling everything intellectually, from pre-snap reads to different checks.”
Despite limited action at Notre Dame, where he completed 20 of 26 passes in relief duty, Minchey’s ability to keep the ball off the ground is evident. When asked to describe his game, Minchey confidently stated, “I’d like to say I’m pretty accurate. Decision-making is something I work on daily, but I’m generally smart with the football.”
Back this up with LSU transfer Nic Anderson’s insights: “He’s always putting that ball in the right spot. If he misses, I’ll let you know.
Kenny’s great. He’s experienced, especially coming from Notre Dame, and he can zip the ball.
I’m excited to see how he leads this offense.”
