In a thrilling SEC Tournament opener, Kentucky welcomed back a key player who hadn’t seen action since breaking his foot on January 21. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his return, Williams made a surprise appearance against LSU, logging 17 impactful minutes. He knocked down a crucial 3-pointer, grabbed two rebounds, and dished out an assist-all without turning the ball over.
UK point guard Denzel Aberdeen was pleasantly surprised by Williams’ return. "To be honest, I didn’t even know he was going to play today.
I’m glad he did," Aberdeen shared after Kentucky’s 87-82 victory. "He came in, stepped up big-time.
He guarded. Hit a big-time 3.
I’m just proud of him and his journey, trying to get back to us as quick as possible."
Otega Oweh, who led the team with 23 points, praised Williams’ dedication. "He trains every single day trying to get back.
That really shows the type of player and person he is," Oweh noted. "He worked hard to get back in game shape.
He was really big for us today defensively, and he made that big-time 3."
Kentucky Radio Network analyst Jack Givens highlighted the significance of Williams’ 3-pointer. "That showed LSU had to extend the defense and gave UK players room to operate inside," Givens explained. "That was a big 3 in the first half."
Coach Mark Pope remained cautiously optimistic post-game. "We’re excited if he keeps responding well," Pope said.
"It’s been a long time since we had him in the rotation. We just felt like he was at a place where we could throw him out there."
Despite not having completed a full live practice, Williams demonstrated his readiness and defensive prowess. "He has a unique ability to impact the game, especially defensively with his length," Pope added. "Banged a 3 for us, which is super helpful."
As Kentucky faces a grueling tournament schedule, having Williams back in the mix is a significant boost. "It’s great to have him back.
I’m very hopeful that his foot will respond well tomorrow," Pope concluded. "We’ll just see."
