Kentucky Basketball Gets a Boost with Kam Williams' Return
In a timely development for Kentucky basketball, sophomore wing Kam Williams is set to make his return just in time for the SEC Tournament. After breaking his left foot back on January 21 during a victory over Texas, Williams is now ready to hit the court again. His name was notably absent from Kentucky’s availability report on Wednesday morning, signaling his readiness to play against LSU in the tournament opener.
Williams was initially listed as probable for the game, but his removal from the report confirms his availability for Mark Pope’s squad. This matchup, featuring 9-seed Kentucky against 16-seed LSU, kicks off at 12:30 p.m. EDT at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena and will be aired on the SEC Network.
With Williams back, the Wildcats now boast 10 healthy scholarship players. They've had a tough stretch, finishing the regular season with just nine players due to injuries. The team has been missing junior guard Jaland Lowe and sophomore forward Jayden Quaintance for extended periods.
There’s been growing optimism about Williams’ return. He recently began running and participating in non-contact drills, even taking part in practice sessions.
Coach Mark Pope hinted at his potential return during a press conference, stating, “We’ll see how his foot responds this evening and tomorrow. He’s somewhere in the vicinity of could play or could not play.”
Williams has been a solid contributor, averaging 6.9 points per game with impressive shooting stats: 34.8% from beyond the arc, 44.9% from the field, and an outstanding 95.0% from the free-throw line. Before his injury, he started the last three games for Kentucky.
Pope is eager to see Williams back in action, saying, “We would love to have some playing time, in-game playing time, for him to get back a rhythm. If we get a chance to play him, it’ll just be a little bit of a mystery to him and to us in terms of how quickly he’s going to shake off the rust.”
Adding to the good news, junior forward Brandon Garrison was also removed from the availability report. Garrison has been a constant presence, playing in all 31 games this season.
However, Lowe and Quaintance remain sidelined. Lowe is out for the season following shoulder surgery, and Quaintance is missing his 17th consecutive game due to a knee injury from a torn ACL suffered in February 2025.
With Williams and Garrison back, Kentucky is poised to tackle the postseason with renewed depth and energy, addressing the fatigue issues that plagued them late in the season.
