The buzz around Kam Williams’ potential return is growing, and it seems like the Wildcats might see their sophomore wing back on the court just in time for the season's climax.
Coach Mark Pope, now in his second year, has been dropping hints about Williams' progress. Last week, he shared his optimism about Williams donning the Kentucky blue before March Madness wraps up the 2025-26 season. While Pope acknowledges that time is tight-only a few regular-season games and two guaranteed tournament appearances remain-he's not closing the door on Williams' return until it's absolutely certain he can't play.
“We’re optimistic because that’s who we are,” Pope said about Williams. “The timeline is tight, and while I’ve kept the specifics of his injury under wraps, there’s a genuine chance that if we extend our season, he could come back and contribute. We’re excited about that possibility.”
Fast forward a week, and Williams is making strides. Pope shared on his radio show that Williams is out of his boot and back on the court at the Joe Craft Center, albeit limited to short-range shots.
“Kam is out of his boot, and he was on the court today taking some four-foot shots, stationary,” Pope revealed. “I’m not sure if that was officially allowed, but he’s eager to return.”
With just three games left in SEC play-against Vanderbilt, at Texas A&M, and Florida in the finale-plus whatever unfolds in Nashville and beyond, Williams is pushing to be ready, should his recovery and the team’s postseason run align.
“He’s still got a way to go, and there are plenty of questions about how quickly we can ramp things up, but he’s eager to get back in the mix,” Pope concluded.
Williams has been averaging 6.9 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 20 minutes per game across 19 appearances, shooting 44.9 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from beyond the arc, and an impressive 95.0 percent from the free-throw line. While we might not see him at peak form until next season, he’s clearly motivated to contribute whatever he can to help the Wildcats make a splash in March.
