Josh Petersen Spots Emily McDonald And Immediately Knows Why

Kentucky's assistant coach Josh Petersen shares insights on why Emily McDonald is a standout addition to the Wildcats' promising lineup.

When Kentucky assistant coach Josh Petersen first laid eyes on Emily McDonald, it was during a scouting trip for another standout player, Savvy Swords. Fast forward to today, and both McDonald and Swords have earned their stripes as McDonald’s All-Americans, ready to bring their talents to Kentucky.

Petersen recalls that moment in September 2024 vividly: “I went to see Savvy in an open gym. I had heard of Emily, and it was like, ‘My God, this kid is perfect for us.

She is a Kenny Brooks type of guard.’” Standing at six feet, McDonald combines length with a smooth playing style and a sharp basketball IQ, making her an ideal fit for the Wildcats.

McDonald hails from Long Island Lutheran (LuHi), a powerhouse in high school basketball, boasting three McDonald’s All-Americans on their roster this year alone. “They have six, maybe seven high-level players on this team.

Four are already committed - one to Duke, one to Vanderbilt, and two to Kentucky - and two more are 2027 recruits,” Petersen shared. Watching her with her club team over the summer, Petersen was impressed by her versatility.

“She runs point and handles the ball a lot. She is a true combo guard.”

What sets McDonald apart is her competitive spirit. “She always brings a lot of competitive juice to the gym.

You can develop skill, and that’s such a bonus, but the true intangible I love is if the kid is a real competitor. Our whole recruiting class is like that.

They are so competitive. Savvy is the savage, and point guard Maddyn Greenway is a pit bull.”

Choosing Kentucky over a national powerhouse like South Carolina, McDonald’s rise through the recruiting ranks to a top-25 national spot is a testament to her hard work and talent. Petersen describes her as “very personable and very well-rounded.

She’s got an awesome family, is a great student, and is unbelievably humble.” In an era where social media presence often overshadows humility, McDonald stands out by letting her game do the talking.
