Arkansas made a playful grab at John Wall on Sunday, and Kentucky fans wasted no time letting them know they weren’t having it.
Wall showed up in blue to watch the Razorbacks at this year’s Baha Mar Hoops Summer League, which prompted the Arkansas Men’s Basketball account to post: "It's okay [John Wall], you can call the Hogs with us." The post didn’t land well in Lexington, where Wall has long been viewed as one of Kentucky’s own and not someone up for rebranding because John Calipari now coaches in Fayetteville.
Wall has already made his feelings on that clear. In a July interview with Kyle Tucker, he said, "I'm always going to support Cal because he's the coach who gave me the opportunity to live out one of my dreams, but the University of Kentucky is the one that let me put on the jersey."
That distinction matters to Kentucky fans, and the reaction showed it. The Arkansas post drew more than 100 replies and counting, with Cats fans flooding in to push back on the idea that Wall had somehow become Razorback property.
The bigger picture here is pretty simple: Wall was in Lexington’s orbit long before Arkansas tried to claim him, and his appearance in support of his former coach doesn’t change that. It also turns the spotlight back to Kentucky and Mark Pope, who now has a chance to answer on the court.
Pope’s first season included a home loss to Calipari and Arkansas at Rupp Arena, but he got some payback with an upset win on the road last season. Kentucky will get another shot in Lexington in February of next year, and that game now carries a little extra edge.
For the Wildcats, the cleanest response is the one that matters most: beat Arkansas again.
