Georgia’s backfield took an immediate hit this week, with newcomer Dante Dowdell now dealing with “serious” injuries after an ATV accident near his home in Picayune, Miss.
Kirby Smart confirmed the news to ESPN on Tuesday during SEC Media Day, and the outlook is still murky. Dowdell is being treated at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, which ESPN described as a facility that specializes in treatment and rehabilitation.
"He's injured," Smart said during SEC Media Day. "We don't know when his return will be.
I don't know the specifics of it, to be honest with you. It was a recreational vehicle, and he had some serious injuries."
For now, the biggest question is simply when - or if - Dowdell will be available for the Bulldogs this season. Smart said his status for the upcoming year is unknown.
Dowdell arrived at Georgia after transferring from Kentucky ahead of the 2026 season, and the expectation was that he would handle meaningful work behind returning starter Nate Frazier. The Mississippi native spent the 2025 season with the Wildcats, finishing with 560 yards and three touchdowns.
His college path has already taken him through Oregon, Nebraska and Kentucky. At Nebraska, Dowdell posted 614 yards and 12 scores in his lone season there. A former four-star recruit, he was projected to be Georgia’s top backup entering the fall.
Frazier remains the clear lead runner after a 947-yard, six-touchdown season, but Georgia’s depth now comes into sharper focus. Chauncey Bowens is next in line after rushing for 526 yards and six touchdowns on 103 carries last year, and Dwight Phillips Jr. is another option if Dowdell is sidelined for an extended stretch. Phillips, the son of 2004 Olympic gold medalist of the same name, ran for 210 yards and one touchdown for Georgia in 2025.
