Former Kentucky running back Dante Dowdell offered a hopeful glimpse into his recovery this week after a devastating ATV accident near his hometown of Picayune, Mississippi left him with multiple serious injuries over the summer.
Dowdell, who spent one season in Lexington after transferring in from Nebraska and previously playing at Oregon, was part of Kentucky’s backfield tandem with Seth McGowan during Mark Stoops’ final year in charge. He finished that season with 112 carries for 560 yards and three touchdowns, including the 79-yard touchdown against Toledo that effectively sealed the opener and became his signature moment with the Wildcats.
Now at Georgia after transferring in the offseason following Will Stein’s arrival, Dowdell’s football future has been pushed into uncertainty by the accident. In a recovery video posted to Instagram, he showed the extent of the damage: a punctured lung, broken ribs, nerve damage to his right arm, broken collarbones on both sides and nine staples in his head.
His caption carried a message of faith and defiance: "God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers!!"
He also included the verse Jeremiah 29:11, "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'Plans to proper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"
Dowdell closed with, "STORY NOT OVER."
The video showed him well into a difficult rehab process. He had been hospitalized for 2.5 months after the accident, and the footage included him being helped to walk and working on dexterity while supported by a harness.
That alone marks a major step forward. After the crash, there were real fears he might never walk again, much less return to football. The road back is still long, and whether he gets back on a field remains unknown, but the update offered something meaningful: proof that he’s fighting his way forward.
Support poured in from Georgia players, other prominent college football names and several former Wildcats who reached out to encourage their old teammate. For Kentucky fans, seeing Dowdell upright and working through rehab was reason enough to breathe a little easier.
