CJ Baxter didn’t let the noise from Alabama linger long. After dealing with adversity throughout his college career, the running back answered with one of his best performances yet in Kentucky’s 31-21 win at No. 9 Texas A&M.
Baxter carried the ball 19 times for 87 yards and scored two third-quarter touchdowns. He also added a 28-yard catch, giving Kentucky a steady presence every time it needed one. Through that win, he reached 164 rushing yards on 39 carries, a 4.2-yard average, and he leads the team with four touchdowns heading into today’s game against South Alabama.
“Football games are won Monday through Friday. Saturday you just put it on display,” Baxter, a Texas transfer, said after the road win.
“The harder you prepare, the easier Saturday is. We didn’t finish the way we wanted against Alabama, so this was a great win.

“The defense gave us a ton of momentum, They created turnovers and that helped us win. That was a great opponent. Nothing but respect to those guys.”
The Wildcats took control in the third quarter, outscoring A&M 21-0 and piling up 196 yards in the period. Baxter said the offense found its rhythm once both parts of the attack started working together.
“Once we got both the pass and run going you can be balanced and do a lot of things. Kudos to the O-line.
They are amazing. Seeing the way they work and motivate each other motivates me.
Willie Rodriguez has a big voice in that. I can’t say enough about those guys,” Baxter said.
For Baxter, the win carried extra meaning. He began his college career at Texas, but injuries cut into his playing time and eventually opened the door for him to move on.
“I have been through a lot the last two years. Last year was not the year I wanted.
This place welcomed me with open arms. They felt like I could get back to where I was.
Those guys put me in position to succeed and I am so thankful,” Baxter said.
He said he still sees room to grow, even after the breakout effort.
“I am still getting my feet wet. I know there are areas I can still improve on.
The most exciting thing is to win but know you can still play better. In the locker room we were excited but I heard guys talking about let’s go back and see what we can correct and get better.
The most exciting part (about the win) is everybody wants to get better and knows we can play better.”
