Caleb Holt Stuns Fans With Bold College Choice Over Kentucky

Caleb Holt, a top-five basketball recruit, chooses Arizona over Kentucky and others, shaking up the 2026 recruiting landscape.

Another top-tier Kentucky basketball recruit has made his decision in the 2026 cycle, and it's a big one.

Five-star shooting guard Caleb Holt has committed to Arizona, making his choice public on national TV during ESPN’s “First Take.” Holt had narrowed his list down to Arizona, Alabama, Houston, Kentucky, and Providence back in December.

Ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect by the 247Sports Composite, Holt stands at 6-foot-5 and hails from Alabama. However, he's showcasing his talents at Prolific Prep in Florida for his final high school season.

Though Kentucky was in the running, it seems Mark Pope’s program wasn't in the final mix for Holt. He visited UK officially in September and returned for an unofficial visit during Big Blue Madness in October.

Additionally, Pope had the chance to work with Holt last summer at a USA Basketball training camp in Colorado, which was instrumental in selecting the U.S. roster for the 2025 FIBA Under-19 World Cup. Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd, who was the head coach for that U.S. team, now welcomes Holt to his program.

Holt becomes Arizona’s second commitment in the 2026 recruiting class, joining four-star small forward Cameron Holmes.

Holt's connections to Kentucky run deep, having played alongside UK players Jayden Quaintance and Jasper Johnson at international events. UK’s assistant coach Jason Hart led the recruiting efforts for Holt.

Zach Welch from Pro Insight Basketball highlights Holt’s standout qualities, emphasizing his determination, grit, and leadership, which consistently influence winning basketball. Holt's defensive prowess, both off the ball and as a versatile on-ball defender, further cements his reputation.

Kentucky, along with Georgia, remains one of the few SEC schools yet to secure a commitment from the current high school senior class. This marks the latest point Kentucky has reached in a recruiting cycle without a high school prospect commitment since at least 2010.

With Holt's decision, Kentucky's focus shifts to the remaining recruits in the 2026 class. Among them are top-ranked prospect Tyran Stokes and five-star power forward Christian Collins.

While Kentucky was once favored for both, the dynamics have shifted. However, recent insights from 247Sports’ Travis Branham suggest Kentucky may be regaining ground with Stokes, who recently clinched a high school state championship in Washington.
