Archie Goodwin pushed back on the criticism he’s been getting after missing La Familia’s first two TBT games, and the exchange has added another layer to an already tense series with The Ville.
La Familia, Kentucky’s alumni team, won the opener in Lexington before Louisville’s alumni squad answered with a blowout in game two. That sets up a decisive game three back in Lexington on Wednesday.
Goodwin did not play in the first game and was expected to be available for the second. He spent much of the day listed as active, but a few hours before tip-off he was downgraded to out.
Before the game, Aaron Harrison posted, “How you do not show up for the guys, shake my head.” Harrison is not playing in TBT this year because he is recovering from an injury and recently had a child.
After The Ville’s win, Harrison followed up with, “I don’t see how you can say you will show up and be committed … then don’t show at all the week of? We could've gotten different players that wanted to play and not play with people’s time.”
Goodwin then responded on Twitter, saying, “The fact that y’all assuming I just left the guys hanging without even knowing my situation is crazy. Stop always thinking of yourself. I got more to my life than just basketball.”
The back-and-forth has left Big Blue Nation frustrated, especially with La Familia coming off a lopsided loss. At the same time, Goodwin’s message makes it clear there is more going on away from the court.
With game three looming, Kentucky fans are hoping GM Twany Beckham can get some reinforcements in town, particularly in the frontcourt. Willie Cauley-Stein is banged up, and Montrezl Harrell put up 34 points in the second game. If La Familia can’t find someone to slow him down, The Ville has a real shot to come into Lexington and take the series.
For Beckham, the next 24 hours loom large.
