Kansas State's Interim Coach Matthew Driscoll Faces Tough Transition
Stepping into the shoes of former Wildcats head coach Jerome Tang was no easy task for interim head coach Matthew Driscoll. After Kansas State's recent 105-91 loss to BYU, Driscoll candidly described the experience as "miserable."
Tang's departure came after a challenging stretch, including a 78-64 loss to Houston and a controversial decision to remove player names from jerseys. Reports suggest Tang's dismissal was linked to a heated rant following a significant defeat to Cincinnati.
Taking over with the Wildcats at 1-11 in conference play, Driscoll managed to rally the team to two victories, one against Baylor and another against West Virginia on senior day. Despite these wins, the journey has been anything but smooth for Driscoll and his players.
Driscoll didn't mince words about the toll this period has taken on him. "Absolutely miserable," he said, highlighting the stress and sleepless nights. It's clear that the pressure of stepping in midseason has been immense.
However, Driscoll clarified that his struggles weren't about the players but the daunting task of proving himself in the fiercely competitive Big 12. "All you’re about is making sure things are organized, and things are right," he explained, emphasizing the personal responsibility he feels.
Despite the challenges, Driscoll remains committed to the team, driven by a promise to his friend and former coach, Tang. "It’s been very hard to mourn, or be emotional," he shared, reflecting on the personal connection and the weight of his new role.
As the season concludes, Kansas State's focus shifts to finding a permanent head coach. Among the leading candidates are Utah State's Jerrod Calhoun and Belmont's Casey Alexander. Saint Louis' Josh Schertz reportedly declined an offer, leaving the Wildcats in search of the right fit.
With a new hire expected in the coming weeks, Kansas State aims to stabilize and build towards a successful future in the conference.
