D. Scott Fritchen has spent more than three decades telling Kansas State’s stories. Now, the longtime Wildcats writer is the one being talked about, as the K-State community and several Big 12 media members rally around him after emergency heart surgery.
Fritchen recently revealed that he was dealing with a heart condition that required surgery. He was diagnosed with aortic dissection, a cardiovascular disease that causes a tear in the layer of the heart. The surgery was successful, but recovery will take time, and there is no timetable for when he’ll be back covering the Wildcats.
The response has been immediate. Fans and colleagues around the Big 12 have flooded him with support, and a GoFundMe set up to help with medical expenses had already brought in more than $9,300.
For Kansas State fans, Fritchen’s byline has been a familiar one for years. He has covered K-State athletics for more than 30 years, working for several outlets after graduating in the late 1990s and later spending recent years writing for the school’s website. His reporting has long gone beyond the surface, the kind of work that comes from knowing the program inside and out.
Even before the surgery, Fritchen was doing what he’s always done: covering the Wildcats in person at Big 12 Media Days in Frisco, Texas. There, he was writing about Collin Klein’s first season as head coach and Avery Johnson heading into his senior year at quarterback.
His connection to Kansas State runs deep, especially with Bill Snyder. Fritchen developed such a strong relationship with the legendary coach that he wrote a book, Bill Snyder: My Football Life and the Rest of the Story,” about the most beloved figure in school history.
For now, the focus is on recovery. The hope is that Fritchen gets through the difficult stretch ahead, avoids the burden of steep medical costs, and eventually finds his way back to the press box, where Wildcats fans have counted on him for years.
