Longtime K State Voice Draws Emotional Support After Sudden Health Scare

The Kansas State community rallies behind D. Scott Fritchen after his emergency heart surgery, showing the deep connection between the veteran sportswriter and Wildcats fans.

D. Scott Fritchen has spent more than three decades telling Kansas State’s stories. Now, the longtime Wildcats writer is the one being talked about, as the K-State community and several Big 12 media members rally around him after emergency heart surgery.

Fritchen recently revealed that he was dealing with a heart condition that required surgery. He was diagnosed with aortic dissection, a cardiovascular disease that causes a tear in the layer of the heart. The surgery was successful, but recovery will take time, and there is no timetable for when he’ll be back covering the Wildcats.

The response has been immediate. Fans and colleagues around the Big 12 have flooded him with support, and a GoFundMe set up to help with medical expenses had already brought in more than $9,300.

For Kansas State fans, Fritchen’s byline has been a familiar one for years. He has covered K-State athletics for more than 30 years, working for several outlets after graduating in the late 1990s and later spending recent years writing for the school’s website. His reporting has long gone beyond the surface, the kind of work that comes from knowing the program inside and out.

Even before the surgery, Fritchen was doing what he’s always done: covering the Wildcats in person at Big 12 Media Days in Frisco, Texas. There, he was writing about Collin Klein’s first season as head coach and Avery Johnson heading into his senior year at quarterback.

His connection to Kansas State runs deep, especially with Bill Snyder. Fritchen developed such a strong relationship with the legendary coach that he wrote a book, Bill Snyder: My Football Life and the Rest of the Story,” about the most beloved figure in school history.

For now, the focus is on recovery. The hope is that Fritchen gets through the difficult stretch ahead, avoids the burden of steep medical costs, and eventually finds his way back to the press box, where Wildcats fans have counted on him for years.

Collin Klein Sees One Reason Kansas State Can Avoid A Rocky Start

Collin Klein is walking into his first season as Kansas States head coach with a built-in advantage that not every rookie in the job gets. At Big 12 Media Days, the former Wildcats quarterback and assistant said the move feels easier because he already knows the program from the inside, and that familiarity should help smooth out what can otherwise be a jarring transition for a first-time head coach.

Kleins challenge now is turning that comfort into a steady start once the season begins. Kansas State is asking him to manage the same program he once played for and coached in, with a roster and staff he already knows, and that kind of continuity can matter in August when teams are still sorting out their identity. The real test is whether that head start is enough to keep the Wildcats from stumbling early while Klein settles into the biggest role of his career. [Read more 🡒]

Joe Jacksons New Backfield Could Change Everything For K-States Offense

Kansas States 2026 backfield is starting to take shape around a familiar name in Joe Jackson, but the bigger story is the mix around him. With new head coach Collin Klein overseeing the offense, the Wildcats have added Rodney Fields Jr. from Oklahoma State and Jay Harris from Oregon to a group that already features the returning starter, giving the room a much different look than it had a year ago.

Fields brings a pass-catching and pass-protecting element that should help on obvious passing downs, while Harris adds the kind of physical presence that can matter near the goal line and in short-yardage situations. Jackson, meanwhile, sees the group as complementary rather than a battle for carries, and that outlook may end up being just as important as the personnel itself if Kansas State wants the backfield to become one of the offenses strengths.
