Kansas States Big 12 Push Took A Hit For One Frustrating Reason

Yamil Talib steps up with a game-changing defensive performance, lifting the Colorado Buffaloes out of their losing streak in a nail-biting overtime victory.

Colorado needed a spark on Halloween, and Yamil Talib delivered one in a way few expected.

With the Buffaloes trying to snap a five-game skid and searching for anything to jolt them against Kansas State on Oct. 31, the seldom-used edge rusher suddenly became the story on defense. Talib got after the Wildcats’ right side, helped force a key third-down stop and finished with two sacks, including his first sack of the 2026 season on a third-and-4 play. By halftime, he had piled up six tackles along with those two sacks.

That kind of production gave Colorado a lift early and showed that the Buffs’ front is more than just Lamont Lester, Santana Hopper - who slid inside to defensive tackle - and linebacker Gideon Lampron. Talib’s night stood out as the biggest surprise inside Folsom Field.

He wasn’t the only Buffalo making noise. Immanuel Ezeogu added six tackles and 0.5 sacks, while Lampron finished with five tackles to lead the linebackers. Makari Vickers chipped in four tackles, and five more defenders - Randon Fontenette, Liona Lefau, Toby Anene, Naeten Mitchell and Jason Stokes Jr. - each had three tackles by halftime.

Colorado’s offense, though, remained a work in progress. Isaac Wilson avoided turnovers and completed eight of 11 passes, but he managed only 82 passing yards through two quarters. That marked the fourth straight slow start with Wilson at quarterback.

The ground game provided more stability. Alabama transfer Richard Young led the Buffaloes at the half with 11 carries for 56 yards, averaging 5.1 yards per carry for a new season high.

He also scored Colorado’s only first-half touchdown, a two-yard run with 1:42 left in the opening quarter. DeKalon Taylor added a 30-yard burst, but no Colorado receiver topped 30 yards before halftime.

Joseph Williams, DeAndre Moore Jr. and Ernest Campbell each caught two passes, with Williams leading the group at 30 receiving yards and Moore next at 27.

Kansas State had its own quarterback issues before kickoff. Avery Johnson was already out because of an injury from two weeks earlier, and Jacob Knuth, who started the Wildcats’ loss to Arizona State on Oct. 24, was also scratched. That left Blake Barnett and Dillon Duff to handle the position, and Colorado held both quarterbacks to 59 passing yards through three quarters.

Kansas State Suddenly Has A Quarterback Debate Fans Can't Ignore

Kansas States trip to Folsom Field ended in a 27-24 overtime loss to Colorado, but the bigger conversation may have been the Wildcats quarterback usage. The offense leaned on two different passers, and Blake Barnett helped spark a late touchdown drive that gave Kansas State a chance to extend the game after a night when the defense had its share of problems but still came up with a few late punts to keep the door open.

Barnetts role in that rally only sharpened the question of how Kansas State wants to handle the position moving forward. In a game decided by a handful of plays, the Wildcats found enough late energy to erase a deficit and force overtime, but the split approach under center leaves plenty to sort out as the season moves on. Kansas State Leaves Colorado With A Bigger Problem Than Another Loss

Kansas States trip to Colorado ended the same way too many of its recent Saturdays have, with another close loss and another reminder that the Wildcats are still searching for answers under first-year coach Chris Klieman. The 27-24 overtime defeat was their second straight and fourth in five games, a stretch that has left little margin for error as the season wears on.

The quarterback situation only added to the uncertainty. Sophomore Dillon Duff got the start, but Blake Barnett finished the game after the Wildcats made a switch and helped spark a late comeback attempt that fell just short. Colorado, meanwhile, finally got its first Big 12 conference win of the season, leaving Kansas State with more to sort through than the final score alone. [Read more 🡒]

Kansas State Turns To An Unknown QB In A Brutal Spot

Kansas State is making a major quarterback pivot at a difficult time, with Dillon Duff set to make his first career start against Colorado. Duff has not appeared in a collegiate game before this opportunity, and his path to the lineup has been slowed by a preseason injury that kept him out until he was recently cleared to play.

Collin Klein has sounded encouraged by what he has seen from Duff behind the scenes, pointing to his work ethic and decision-making as reasons the Wildcats are willing to trust him in a pressure-packed spot. For a team looking for stability at the most important position, this is a big leap of faith, and it will say plenty about where Kansas State stands in the quarterback room going forward.
