Kansas State Adds Cory Patterson as Running Backs Coach, Bolstering Offensive Staff
MANHATTAN - After spending recent weeks reinforcing the defensive side of the ball, Kansas State head coach Collin Klein is now turning his focus to the offense - and he’s bringing in a coach with a proven track record of developing talent. Cory Patterson has officially joined the Wildcats as their new running backs coach, adding a versatile and experienced voice to the offensive room.
Patterson arrives in Manhattan after a season coaching running backs at Oklahoma State, where his unit combined for over 1,100 rushing yards and six touchdowns in 2025. While those numbers might not jump off the page, Patterson’s value goes far beyond the box score. He brings a reputation for player development and adaptability, having coached multiple skill positions at the Power 4 level - including tight ends at Illinois, wide receivers at Purdue, and now running backs at both Illinois and Oklahoma State.
His coaching journey is a testament to his ability to connect with players and elevate their game. Patterson played his college ball at Lindenwood before a leg injury ended his playing career early, but he quickly pivoted to the sidelines.
He cut his teeth as a high school coach in the St. Louis area, first at Christian Brothers and then at Trinity Catholic, where he built a powerhouse program.
During his time as head coach, he led Trinity Catholic to a 27-6 record and a state championship, earning a reputation for grooming young talent and creating a winning culture.
That ability to develop players translated to the college game. During his time at Illinois, Patterson played a key role in the rise of current Cincinnati Bengals running back Chase Brown.
Under Patterson’s guidance, Brown racked up 2,648 yards and 15 touchdowns over two seasons - production that helped launch him into the NFL spotlight. It’s that kind of resume that makes Patterson’s arrival in Manhattan a compelling one for a program that’s long prided itself on tough, productive running back play.
“I am excited about the opportunity to do something special here at K-State,” Patterson said in a statement. “There has been a tradition of great running back play here, so we have to keep the party going!”
Klein and his staff are clearly looking to maintain - and build on - that tradition. K-State has long been known for its hard-nosed, physical ground game, and Patterson’s coaching style fits that mold. He brings a mix of energy, experience, and a player-first approach that should resonate well in the locker room and on the recruiting trail.
Here’s a look at Patterson’s coaching journey so far:
- 2009-12: Assistant Coach, Christian Brothers High School (MO)
- 2013-14: Offensive Coordinator, Trinity Catholic High School (MO)
- 2015-17: Head Coach, Trinity Catholic High School (MO)
- 2018-20: Tight Ends Coach, Illinois
- 2021-22: Running Backs Coach, Illinois
- 2023-24: Associate Head Coach / Wide Receivers Coach, Purdue
- 2025: Running Backs Coach, Oklahoma State
- 2026: Running Backs Coach, Kansas State
With a diverse coaching background and a knack for developing talent at every stop, Patterson’s addition gives K-State another strong piece as the Wildcats look to sharpen their offense for the 2026 season. If his track record is any indication, the running back room in Manhattan is in good hands.
