Coaching Carousel: New Faces Bring Fresh Energy to K-State
The coaching staff at K-State is getting a significant boost with the addition of some familiar faces from Belmont. This transition promises to bring a new level of enthusiasm and expertise to the team.
JJ Butler Joins the Ranks
JJ Butler, who impressed as an assistant coach at Belmont last season, is bringing his talents to K-State. A former player at Lipscomb University under Alexander, Butler played in 85 games, contributing with his energy and leadership on the court. His previous stint as an assistant coach at Delaware further honed his coaching skills.
Alexander had high praise for Butler, stating, "JJ Butler is a great addition to our staff. His energy, communication skills, and leadership were evident as a player, and his coaching career has been impressive. We fully expect him to elevate our staff."
Luke Smith's Journey
Luke Smith, another Belmont alum, transitions to K-State after serving as Belmont's director of player development and assistant coach over the past two seasons. As a guard for Belmont, Smith was a consistent performer, averaging 10.3 points, 2.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.
Alexander expressed his excitement about the move, saying, "I'm thrilled to have Kerron, JJ, and Luke join me at K-State. They cover all the bases and will be difference-makers. Their passion for the game and player development is unmatched."
Kerron Johnson's Return
Kerron Johnson, a former Belmont standout, also joins the K-State staff. Johnson's tenure as an assistant coach from 2024 to 2026 at Belmont showcased his ability to lead and inspire.
A key player from 2009 to 2013, Johnson helped Belmont reach three Tournament appearances and was inducted into the Belmont Athletic Hall of Fame in 2021. After an international playing career, he returned to Belmont as a graduate assistant before moving into his coaching role.
Potential Addition: Sean Rutigliano
Rumors are swirling about Sean Rutigliano, currently at Colby, potentially reuniting with Alexander at K-State. Having worked under Alexander for several years at Belmont and Lipscomb, Rutigliano's possible move could further solidify the coaching lineup with his extensive experience and strategic acumen.
With these dynamic coaches on board, K-State is poised for an exciting new chapter. The combination of experience, passion, and a strong track record of player development makes this transition one to watch closely.
