Avery Johnson Stuns Fans as CBS Sports Ranks Him at No. 8

As new head coach Collin Klein takes the helm, Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson faces a pivotal senior season to prove his critics wrong and reclaim his stellar form.

Kansas State's quarterback Avery Johnson had a challenging junior year, but there's a sense of optimism as he gears up for his senior season. CBS Sports placed him at No. 8 among Big 12 quarterbacks, nestled between Utah’s Devon Dampier and TCU’s Jaden Craig.

Last season wasn't what Johnson or the Wildcats had hoped for. With 2,385 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and six interceptions in 2025, his performance fell short of the top-five conference quarterback expectations.

Johnson struggled to ignite the passing game, often opting for short-yardage plays and not utilizing his deep-ball potential, despite having a talent like Jayce Brown, who has since transferred to LSU. Additionally, Johnson didn’t fully leverage his dual-threat capabilities, rushing for 477 yards and eight touchdowns.

However, the return of Collin Klein as head coach and offensive play-caller brings renewed hope. Klein, instrumental in Johnson’s recruitment, is known for his success with dual-threat quarterbacks and aims to restore Johnson’s early promise. The team has bolstered its backfield, possibly to enhance the rushing attack, as perimeter additions were minimal.

Klein expressed his strategy, saying, "We're gonna build a package around him and structure it in a way that he can be very confident in what he's being asked to do. I just want him to cut it loose and play fast and confident."

Johnson is determined to meet and exceed those expectations, aiming to elevate Kansas State in his final year. He shared his commitment on Instagram, stating, "There is unfinished business here, and I'm not done yet.

This place, this program, and this fanbase mean everything to me. The relationships I've built, the culture we've created, and the goals we still have ahead of us are too important to walk away from.

I believe in this team. I believe in our coaches.

And I believe the best is still ahead."

As Johnson looks to his senior season, the Wildcats and their fans are hopeful for a resurgence, with eyes set on new heights.
