Kansas football is down to the final week of training camp, and that means the competition is getting tighter by the day.
The Jayhawks opened their fourth block of practices on Sunday and now have two more blocks of three practices before camp wraps up and the players turn their attention to the start of classes. It’s a critical stretch for anyone still trying to climb the depth chart, whether that means winning a starting job or locking down a reserve role before KU moves into a mock game week during the first week of classes.
One of the battles worth tracking has been at wide receiver, where Keaton Kubecka and Nahzae Cox have both made their case.
Cox entered camp as the favorite, and that hasn’t changed entirely. But Kubecka has put himself in the mix by simply staying on the field. Through nine practices, he has been able to participate, and that mattered coming in because one of the main questions was whether he could stay healthy.
Kubecka also brings a different kind of value. He knows the scheme better and has earned the trust of the coaching staff. That kind of familiarity counts, especially this late in camp when every rep matters.
Cox, meanwhile, has kept showing up in the ways that matter most for a receiver. He continues to make plays and projects as a deep threat this fall. The feeling here is that both players will have a role once the season gets rolling.
If KU were lining up for Long Island today, Kubecka might get the first crack on the field. But over the longer haul, Cox appears likely to end up with more snaps.

AJ Storrs Latest Move Is A Rough Reminder For Kansas
AJ Storrs path through college basketball has already become one of the sports stranger modern odysseys, and Kansas is part of the reason the story still lingers. After transferring in from Wisconsin in 2024, he never found his footing in Lawrence, then revived his stock at Ole Miss, where he averaged 15.5 points per game and showed the kind of scoring touch that made him such an intriguing portal target in the first place.
Now, following a recent NCAA court injunction that opened the door to more eligibility, Storr has committed to UNLV and is headed to yet another new stop. It is his ninth school in nine years, a reminder of just how fast roster turnover can reshape a players arc and how quickly a brief, disappointing fit at Kansas can be followed by a much stronger rebound somewhere else. Kansas Backfield Just Earned An Early Dose Of National Respect
Kansas got an early show of national respect in the backfield, with Dylan Edwards and Yasin Willis landing on the preseason list of Doak Walker Award candidates. The honor puts both running backs in a group of 62 players considered for the trophy that goes to the countrys most outstanding back, and it also puts the Jayhawks among a small handful of programs with multiple nominees.
For a Kansas team trying to build around legitimate offensive talent, that kind of recognition matters before the season even starts. Edwards and Willis still have a long runway before the award field narrows later in the year, but being included now gives the Jayhawks a reminder that their run game is at least being viewed on a national stage. Keaton Kubecka Is Forcing His Way Into Kansas Receiver Battle
Keaton Kubecka has worked his way back into the conversation at receiver for Kansas after a lost 2023 season, and the redshirt junior is no longer just trying to get healthy enough to participate. He has shown up in camp with more confidence and a better feel for the position, giving the Jayhawks another name to consider as they sort through a competition that has picked up even more importance with new faces in the room.
What has stood out to Kansas coaches is the steadiness Kubecka has brought back to his game, along with a more aggressive approach that has helped him re-establish trust. The Jayhawks have also adjusted practice scheduling to keep players fresher through camp, a small but meaningful change as Kubecka tries to turn this momentum into a real role when the season begins.
