Kansas may have landed a frontcourt piece in Trey Kaufman-Renn, but the situation around his eligibility is still very much in motion.
The NCAA is appealing a preliminary injunction granted by Indiana Special Judge Justin Mills, a ruling that gives the 2026 NBA draftee an extra year of eligibility. Henry Greenstein of the Lawrence Journal-World first reported the development.

Kaufman-Renn, a Purdue transfer, was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the No. 59 pick in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft. Minnesota never signed the four-year Boilermaker to a pro contract, and Bill Self brought him into the Kansas mix anyway, even with the Big 12’s firm rule against member schools fielding or rostering professional athletes in any part of their programs.
Self’s stance on adding a former NBA Draft pick was blunt.
“If we don’t play with them, we’ll play against them.”
On the floor, Kaufman-Renn already gave Kansas a glimpse of what he can bring. In the Jayhawks’ regular-season debut against Fordham, he scored 9 points on 4-of-5 shooting and grabbed five rebounds in 23 minutes. He did not start, but he’s clearly in the mix as Self sorts through the rotation.
That battle is crowded. Kansas has real depth up front, with Kaufman-Renn competing for minutes alongside Christian Reeves, Utah transfer Keanu Dawes and second-year returner Paul Mbiya.
Reeves started against Fordham and finished with 2 points, 2 blocks and 5 rebounds.
Kansas is back at Allen Fieldhouse on Friday against Middle Tennessee. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CT.

Former Kansas Star Kevin McCullar Jr. Just Got Another NBA Shot
Kevin McCullar Jr. is getting another chance to stick in the NBA, this time with the Toronto Raptors on a two-way contract. For Kansas fans, it is another reminder of how far the former Jayhawk has come since his standout college career, and of how his all-around game has kept him on the radar even as he has moved through the league.
McCullar spent the last two seasons with the New York Knicks after being drafted by the Phoenix Suns in 2024 and then having his rights traded to New York. He has shown enough versatility in both NBA and G League action to keep earning opportunities, and now Toronto gives him a fresh path to continue building his career. [Read more 🡒]
Kansas Faces A Troubling QB Question As UCF Gets A Lift
UCF is heading into the matchup with a clearer answer under center, planning to start Alonza Barnett III even as he works back from a hamstring injury. The Knights are also waiting on the status of Keyone Jenkins, who is questionable with an aggravated ankle issue, while the roster takes a hit elsewhere with offensive lineman Owen Spell and defensive tackle RJ Jackson Jr. out for the rest of the regular season.
Kansas, meanwhile, is still sorting through its own quarterback uncertainty. Isaiah Marshall, Cole Ballard and Chase Jenkins are all questionable entering the game, leaving Lance Leipold to stress the need for cleaner execution and better pass protection as the Jayhawks try to steady an offense that may be forced to adjust on the fly. Kansas Injury Report Leaves One Big Question Before UCF
Kansas injury report ahead of UCF brings a little more clarity at one spot and a lot of uncertainty at another. Isaiah Marshall was upgraded to probable, which is a welcome sign for a program trying to sort out its quarterback room, while the rest of the report still carries the usual late-week mix of concern and caution. Along with Marshall, the Jayhawks listed three quarterbacks as questionable, including Bam Crouch, and that alone makes the position worth watching closely heading into game day.
The rest of the report also touches key spots on both sides of the ball, with defensive end David Santiago, starting center Kasen Carpenter and backup running back Jalen Dupree all among the injured players. For Kansas, the bigger issue is not just who is available, but how much flexibility the staff will have if the quarterback situation stays unsettled. With UCF on deck, the Jayhawks are still waiting on one of the most important answers of the week. [Read more 🡒]
