Kansas Makes A Crucial QB Change Before TCU

Despite injury woes, Kansas shakes up their lineup with Cole Ballard at quarterback for the crucial clash against TCU.

Kansas is making a quarterback switch for Saturday’s Big 12 trip to TCU, with Cole Ballard set to get the start for the Jayhawks.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Ballard will replace Isaiah Marshall under center. It will be Ballard’s first start since the 2023 season and only the second start of his college career.

Marshall had opened Kansas’ first seven games this season, but his availability moved in the wrong direction during the week. He was first listed as probable before being downgraded to questionable on Thursday’s availability report. After last week’s 25-24 win over Baylor, Kansas head coach Lance Leipold said Marshall had been “a little banged up.”

That opens the door for Ballard in a road game that carries real weight for both teams. Kansas and TCU both enter Saturday at 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 play, leaving each side with little margin as the season moves deeper into November.

Ballard has played in three games this season and completed 5 of 8 passes for 96 yards. He also missed time earlier in the year after suffering a shoulder injury against Missouri.

His lone previous start came as a true freshman against Kansas State in the 2023 Sunflower Showdown. Ballard went 11-for-? No - Ballard completed 11 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown as Kansas came close before falling 31-27.

He spent the offseason battling Marshall for the starting job after Jalon Daniels departed, with Marshall ultimately winning the competition.

Kansas comes into this one off its first Big 12 victory of the year, last weekend’s win over Baylor, while TCU is trying to bounce back after a 24-20 home loss to West Virginia.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on FS1.

Kansas Faces One Huge Problem Heading Into TCU Showdown

Kansas heads into its matchup with TCU facing a familiar kind of pressure, only this time it comes with a major question at quarterback. Isaiah Marshall is listed as questionable because of injury, and his status could shape everything Kansas wants to do offensively against a Horned Frogs team that has earned a reputation for making life difficult in the Big 12.

The Jayhawks are already in the underdog role, which only adds to the challenge of dealing with one of the leagues better defenses. If Marshall is limited or unavailable, Kansas may have to adjust on the fly against a unit built to squeeze out mistakes and force opponents out of rhythm, turning an already tough road into an even steeper climb. Texas Could Crash The Title Race As SEC Hype Builds

Preseason conference chatter is already tilting toward the SEC, and the leagues case starts with the kind of roster depth and spending power that can reshape a title race before it even begins. The Big Ten just spent the 2025-26 season setting the standard, but the early read for 2026-27 is that the SEC is positioned to push back, with the usual mix of proven programs, aggressive roster building and a few teams that could move the whole conversation.

For Kansas fans, the interesting part is how much the Big 12 still fits into that national picture. The league remains full of uncertainty, from eligibility questions to coaching changes and the kind of roster turnover that can swing a preseason ranking quickly, and Texas is one of the teams that could complicate the race at the top. If the Longhorns settle in the way some around the sport expect, they would not just matter in the conference standings, they could also become part of the broader argument over which league really owns the season. Christian Braun May Be Giving Kansas Fans The NBA Update They Wanted

Christian Braun gave Kansas fans a familiar kind of jolt on Tuesday night, only this time it came in a Denver Nuggets uniform. The former Jayhawk turned in a career-best 31 points in a 127-120 road win over the Phoenix Suns, knocking down seven three-pointers and adding three steals in a performance that showed off the same energy and two-way edge that made him such a valuable player in Lawrence.

Brauns night was about more than just the scoring burst, too. He helped make life difficult for Devin Booker, who finished with 20 points, and Nuggets coach David Adelman singled out Brauns confident shooting and all-around floor game afterward. For Kansas fans keeping tabs on their alums, it was the kind of update that stands out because it looked less like a hot streak and more like a player settling into a bigger role. [Read more 🡒]
