Kansas’ tight end room took another hit this week, and this one goes beyond a temporary injury report. Redshirt freshman walk-on Conlee Hovey has medically retired, adding another tough turn to a season that has already seen the Jayhawks absorb a string of setbacks across games against LIU, Missouri and Arizona State before heading into the bye week.
Hovey shared the news in an Instagram post, and his message made clear how much the decision had cost him. “I have made the hardest decision of my life and that is to medically retire from football.
I never imagined that I would go through 2 knee surgeries and continuous lingering issues in my first years of college. I wish I could keep playing but I am physically unable to perform at the level I need to,” opened up Hovey in his post on Instagram.
He also reflected on what football has meant to him, even as his playing career comes to an end. “Although my journey has not been what I had planned for l have met lifetime friends and endless memories.
Football has taught me countless life lessons and I am forever grateful for what this game has brought me. I knew one day playing this game had to come to an end I just didn't expect it so soon.”
And in closing, he thanked Kansas and the people around him for sticking with him through his athletic journey. “To KU football thank you for believing in me and giving me this opportunity.
Thank you to everyone who has been apart of my athletic journey I would not have made it this far without all of you. I can't wait to still be involved in football anyway I can whether that's coaching or teaching my future children the game.

Hovey’s path to Lawrence was a walk-on route after coming out of Louisburg High School, where he was ranked as Kansas’ third-best tight end. He had FCS offers from South Dakota State, South Dakota and Illinois State, along with an FBS offer from Arkansas State and interest from Kansas State and Kansas before choosing the walk-on opportunity.
Kansas’ depth chart at tight end has already been stretched thin. Carson Bruhn and Jalien Butler sit atop the two-deep, with Bruhn already dealing with an injury that kept him out of the Union Jack Classic and Butler having played in all three games.
The timing is especially rough because this position group has been through this before. Last season, DeShawn Hanika got off to a strong start before going down, and Boden Groen stepped in and thrived. Now Bruhn’s recent injury and Hovey’s retirement leave tight end coach Matt Lubick facing another test in a room that keeps getting squeezed.
