Kansas Just Made A Uniform Move Fans Will Definitely Debate

Kansas Athletics partners with Ripple in a groundbreaking agreement to feature the first cryptocurrency jersey patch in major college sports, heralding a new era of innovative collaborations.

Kansas Athletics is putting a new look on its uniforms.

On Wednesday, July 8, the school announced a multi-year partnership with Ripple that will bring an XRP jersey patch to every Jayhawks program. According to the release, Ripple is “the leading provider of blockchain-based enterprise solutions across traditional and digital finance.” The agreement was made with Learfield and Jayhawk Sports Properties involved, and it marks the first time a cryptocurrency has been used on the jersey of a major college program.

Travis Goff, Kansas’ vice chancellor and director of athletics, said the move fits the moment college sports is in.

“This era of college athletics demands innovative, forward-thinking partnerships,” Travis Goff, Kansas ’ vice chancellor and director of athletics, said. “Ripple recognizes the unique reach and passion of the Jayhawk community, and we’re proud they have chosen Kansas Athletics as a premier platform to introduce XRP to millions of sports fans. Having the XRP logo displayed on our Jayhawk uniforms reflects a shared commitment to innovation and excellence.”

The partnership will go well beyond the patch itself. Ripple branding will show up across Jayhawks venues, digital properties and event signage. The company will also fund financial and technology education programs for KU athletes and the broader campus community, while working to connect KU graduates with careers in the technology industry.

Learfield president and CEO Cole Gahagan pointed to the collaboration behind the deal.

“Under Travis’s leadership, KU has not only elevated the entire athletics department, but the Jayhawks have reimagined what is possible in today's rapidly changing environment,” Cole Gahagan, President and CEO of Learfield, said. “This partnership with Ripple highlights the extraordinary collaboration between Learfield and Kansas Athletics, integrating XRP branding into unforgettable moments and incredible experiences for Jayhawks fans.”

Kansas’ coaches also weighed in on the announcement. Football coach Lance Leipold said the program is ready to wear the logo with pride.

“Our football program is excited to proudly display the XRP logo on our jerseys. We’re thankful to have such a strong relationship with Ripple through the leadership of CEO and proud Jayhawk, Brad Garlinghouse. We think this is a great partnership between two strong brands with bright futures.”

Men’s basketball coach Bill Self called it a significant moment for the department and for college athletics more broadly.

“This is an important day for all of Kansas Athletics, and we are certainly happy to be a part of that. It’s a critical time in college athletics to be bold, and that’s what is being accomplished with today's announcement. We will make sure our guys understand the significance of the partnership and why it is beneficial for them moving forward.”

Women’s basketball coach Brandon Schneider said the deal adds to the momentum around the program.

“We are excited to have our team represent XRP while they are competing as Jayhawks. This is a great time for student-athletes to be at Kansas, and today’s announcement is another indication of that.

Our department is always looking for ways to innovate and be different and that is exciting to be part of. We are thankful for the partnership with XRP and look forward to much success moving forward.”

Former Jayhawk Zeke Mayo Finally Got His Chance And Delivered

Zeke Mayo finally got on the floor for the Hawks in their final Salt Lake City Summer League game, and the former Kansas guard made the most of it. In 14 minutes, he scored 11 points on efficient shooting, knocked down three of four from deep, added two steals and an assist, and did it all without a turnover.

For Mayo, who had been a DNP in Atlantas first two games in Utah, the outing was the kind of response a summer-league player needs when roster spots are still in play. He spent last season with the Cleveland Charge in the G League, and while Atlanta has not yet made any cuts following the Utah slate, Mayo at least gave the Hawks something to think about before the next stop. Kansas Just Landed A Jersey Deal That Changes Everything

Kansas is reportedly on the verge of a jersey sponsorship arrangement that would push the program into a new era of college athletics branding. The deal is said to run for five years and bring in $30 million, with the XRP logo set to show up on Kansas uniforms across all 16 programs, a notable shift for a school that has long leaned on tradition as much as winning.

Beyond the look of the jerseys, the partnership is being tied to a broader push around campus. Ripple is also said to be funding financial and technology education efforts at KU while helping connect Kansas graduates with tech jobs, giving the agreement a reach that goes well past game day. KUs release frames it as a first-of-its-kind crypto jersey deal for a major college program, which is the kind of move that tends to draw attention long before the uniforms do. [Read more 🡒]
