Ah, March Madness - where anything can happen, and last night, it almost did. The Kansas Jayhawks narrowly avoided a historic upset against the No. 13 Cal Baptist Lancers, pulling out a 68-60 win that was anything but straightforward.
A First Half to Forget (and Then Remember)
The opening minutes were a grind. With the score at a mere 10-5 in favor of Kansas after more than eight minutes, it seemed like neither team could find their rhythm. The court was littered with missed opportunities - 21 field goals went astray before the Jayhawks finally found their footing.
Enter freshman sensation Darryn Peterson. His 15-point surge helped Kansas end the half on a 28-13 run, securing a 38-18 lead that seemed to set the stage for a comfortable win.
Two Halves, Two Stories
Kansas fans probably thought they were in for a relaxing second half. The Lancers' 21.9% shooting in the first half, with Dominique Daniels Jr. struggling to a 1/10 mark, had all signs pointing to a Jayhawks cruise into the next round.
But basketball is a game of runs, and Cal Baptist delivered a jaw-dropping one. The Lancers clawed back from a 26-point deficit, fueled by Daniels' second-half explosion of 20 points and Martel Williams' 11-point contribution. Suddenly, the Jayhawks' lead was sliced to just six with 1:20 remaining.
Kansas' offense, meanwhile, sputtered to a 40% shooting rate in the second half, with Peterson as the lone double-digit scorer.
Avoiding a Record Nobody Wants
When Williams' layup cut the lead to six, Kansas was on the brink of an unwanted record - nearly surpassing BYU's 2012 record comeback from 25 points down. But fate, and a couple of missed shots from Daniels, spared them. Tre White's clutch performance sealed the game, saving the Jayhawks from a nightmare scenario.
As Kansas fans exhale, the questions linger. Next up, they face St.
John's on Sunday evening at 5:15 p.m. CT, live on CBS.
The Jayhawks will need to regroup quickly if they hope to advance further in this unpredictable tournament.
