Kansas Guard Peterson Stuns as Cramping Issues Resurface in Victory

Kansas guard Darryn Peterson's recurring cramping issues raise concerns for Coach Bill Self as key games loom ahead.

Kansas guard Darryn Peterson's performance against Oklahoma State was cut short due to cramping, as confirmed by head coach Bill Self. Despite this setback, Peterson's early contributions were pivotal in securing an 81-69 victory for the Jayhawks.

Peterson was on fire in the first half, playing just over 15 minutes and setting the tone with a seven-minute stretch to start the game. He racked up 20 points by halftime, shooting 6-for-11 from the field.

His hot hand continued briefly into the second half, where he drained a three-pointer before signaling to Self that he needed to exit the game. At that point, Peterson had tallied 23 points, and KU held a 46-35 lead.

Cramping has been a recurring issue for Peterson, often affecting his ability to finish games. While he's missed 11 games for various reasons, cramps have frequently sidelined him during second halves. However, the team has learned to adapt in his absence, maintaining their composure and closing out games effectively.

Self expressed disappointment over the situation, noting that Peterson was on track for a standout performance. "It's happened often enough that our guys have learned to play without him," Self remarked, highlighting the team's resilience even when missing their star freshman.

As the postseason approaches, KU remains a strong contender for the Big 12 title. The upcoming schedule is challenging, with games against Cincinnati, Houston, and Arizona.

Self acknowledged the importance of having all key players available, especially with the NCAA Tournament looming. He admitted concerns about Peterson's availability but remained optimistic about the progress being made.

"It's certainly a concern," Self stated. "In the NCAA Tournament, you need all your best players ready to go.

One off day can derail not just a game, but an entire season. We're making progress, though."

KU's ability to adapt and thrive, even amid challenges, will be crucial as they navigate the final stretch of the season.
