Kansas Faces Its Biggest Big 12 Test Yet At Utah

Kansas hopes to upset 12th-ranked Utah in their Big 12 road opener, relying on strong defense and improved special teams.

Kansas heads into Saturday night’s trip to Salt Lake City with a chance to find out how real its early defensive numbers are. The Jayhawks will face No. 12 Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium in a Big 12 road opener that looks like one of their steepest tests of the season.

Kansas is 2-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while Utah comes in unbeaten at 4-0. Kickoff is set for 9:15 p.m.

CT on ESPN. Utah is listed as a 15.5-point favorite, with the over/under at 51.5 points.

The Jayhawks have built their start around defense, and that unit will be under the microscope again here. Kansas is allowing just 244.8 yards per game, which ranks first in the Big 12 in total defense. If the Jayhawks are going to hang around, they’ll have to keep Utah from turning that advantage into an early knockout.

That challenge gets a lot harder when you look at what Utah has done on the other side of the ball. The Utes lead the Big 12 in scoring defense, giving up only 10.3 points per game, and they’re coming off a 31-17 road win at Iowa State. That result gives Utah momentum heading into its home game against Kansas.

Kansas arrives with some confidence of its own after a 55-0 rout of Middle Tennessee. That was the Jayhawks’ first shutout since 2008, and the offense piled up a program-record 700 total yards behind quarterback Isaiah Marshall. Still, that kind of production will be much tougher to duplicate against Utah’s front.

One of the biggest individual battles to watch is Kansas’ defensive line against Utah quarterback Devon Dampier. Defensive end Leroy Harris III has been one of Kansas’ most productive defenders, and the Jayhawks will need him and the rest of the front to get pressure if they want to force mistakes.

Kansas also has a special teams issue to clean up. The Jayhawks need to tighten kickoff coverage after giving up two long returns against Middle Tennessee.

On offense, Marshall has to take care of the ball and give Kansas a chance to stay on schedule. The Jayhawks would also benefit from getting the run game going, both to help control possession and to keep Utah’s offense watching from the sideline.

Tyran Stokes Already Gave Kansas Fans A Reason To Get Excited

A quick look inside Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday gave Kansas fans an early fall preview of what this roster can become, and it did not take long for Tyran Stokes to find his way into the conversation. About 200 fans watched a 45-minute open practice, where the freshman guard and top-rated 2026 recruit turned heads with a notable 3-point shot in the session, a small moment that still carried the kind of buzz this fan base tends to notice right away.

There was other encouraging news in the gym, too. Senior center Christian Reeves, working back from offseason labrum surgery, was active in practice, while seniors Tre White and Melvin Council Jr. also took part with the team. For a group still sorting out its pieces, the open workout offered a snapshot of depth, health and upside, even if the biggest intrigue for Kansas fans may already be the newcomer who wasted little time making an impression. Kansas Shutout Couldnt Hide One Problem That May Matter At Utah

A 55-0 win is supposed to leave little room for worry, and Kansas certainly earned the right to enjoy its first shutout since 2008 against Middle Tennessee. The defense smothered the Blue Raiders, the offense piled up points and the result looked every bit like the kind of lopsided opener that can build momentum quickly.

Lance Leipold still had one obvious sore spot to point to afterward: kickoff coverage. Middle Tennessee found repeated success returning kicks, and for a team heading next to Utah, that kind of special teams leak stands out even in a blowout. Kansas has plenty to like from Saturday, but fixing that phase before a tougher test will matter if the Jayhawks want the same kind of margin against better competition. [Read more 🡒]

Jalon Daniels Is Giving Kansas Fans A New Reason To Watch Sundays

Jalon Daniels gave Kansas fans a familiar name to follow on Sundays, and this week he had a result worth checking in on. The former Jayhawks quarterback picked up his first NFL victory as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers knocked off the Dallas Cowboys 24-16, with Daniels stepping in as the starter for an injured Baker Mayfield and helping Tampa Bay secure its first win of the 2026 season.

Daniels completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards, throwing one touchdown against one interception while also adding 23 rushing yards. For a player whose college career already made him a must-watch in Lawrence, the chance to see him handle an NFL start and come away with a win only gives Kansas supporters another reason to keep an eye on the early slate each Sunday.
