Kansas heads into Saturday’s matchup with Arizona State carrying a crowded injury report, and the latest Big 12 availability update leaves several important pieces hanging in the balance.
Linebacker Bam Crouch is the headliner. Pete Thamel previously reported him as doubtful after he hurt his shoulder in Kansas’ season opener against LIU, and he missed the Jayhawks’ loss to Missouri.
His outlook has improved, though, and the current report has him listed as questionable. That at least leaves open the possibility that Kansas gets one of its more experienced defenders back for a game against an Arizona State offense that put up 70 points in its opener.
Crouch transferred in from Boston College during the offseason and was expected to be a major part of the defense. Before leaving the opener, he had two tackles and a sack.
Kansas is also waiting on help at receiver. Cam Pickett is questionable after dealing with a leg injury that has already kept him out of the first two games. He was supposed to be one of Isaiah Marshall’s top options after leading Kansas with 45 catches for 476 yards and three touchdowns in 2025.
Tight end Carson Bruhn is in the same category. The redshirt sophomore is questionable with an undisclosed injury, and if he’s cleared, he could give Marshall another target in the passing game.
The most troubling note for Kansas may be at quarterback. Cole Ballard is doubtful after injuring his shoulder in the 38-21 loss to Missouri.
He was seen with his right arm in a sling in the fourth quarter and did not practice Monday, according to reports. Ballard came in late after Isaiah Marshall’s performance against Missouri, but left after taking a hit.
If Ballard can’t go, freshman Chase Jenkins would be the likely backup behind Marshall, according to reporting.
With several players already ruled out and others still uncertain, Kansas is looking at Saturday through a depth-first lens. Crouch, Pickett and Bruhn are questionable, Ballard is doubtful, and the Jayhawks will have to sort through that uncertainty against Arizona State.
