Justin Cross Stuns Kansas Fans With Unique Pre-Game Rituals

Justin Cross's unique handshakes have transformed him from a junior college transfer to the essential team anchor for Kansas basketball.

San Diego - The Kansas Jayhawks have a unique pregame ritual that sets the tone for their games, and it all starts with Justin Cross, their unofficial handshake specialist.

As the lights dim and names echo through the arena, each member of the Kansas starting five makes their way through a tunnel of teammates, capping off the journey with a special handshake with Cross. This tradition has become a staple for the team, and Cross, now in his fifth year of college basketball, embraces his role with enthusiasm.

Cross, a junior college transfer, has crafted these handshakes throughout the season, each one tailored to the personality of his teammates. His connection with freshman star Darryn Peterson is a prime example. Their handshake, featuring a double high-five followed by a face “spritz,” is all about injecting energy into the game.

“It’s like giving yourself some energy,” Cross explains. And energy is exactly what Cross brings to the table, with teammate Bryson Tiller describing him as the team’s anchor.

Tiller’s own handshake with Cross involves high-fives leading into a shoulder lock, symbolizing a call to “lock it in.” It’s a fitting gesture for the steady forward from Georgia.

Flory Bidunga opts for simplicity with a quick double high-five, while Tre White, also known as “Ski,” incorporates his nickname into their routine by mimicking the act of pulling on a ski mask. “We’re all about getting straight to business,” White says.

Melvin Council Jr., a fellow former junior college standout, shares an energetic handshake with Cross. Their routine ends with a “Slime” sign, a nod to their close bond and shared history. Council recalls their JUCO days fondly, highlighting the unexpected journey to becoming college teammates.

The camaraderie is evident in every handshake, each one a testament to the team’s unity. Cross’s energy and leadership are vital, as all five starters acknowledge his impact on the court.

Cross even had his moment to shine in a different role during the season’s senior night against Kansas State, where he made his only start for Kansas. Peterson stepped up to handle the handshakes, earning high praise from Cross for his performance.

“He did a great job,” Cross said, reflecting on Peterson’s efforts. “A-plus. He’s always rooting for everyone and is a fantastic teammate.”

These handshakes are more than just pregame rituals; they embody the spirit and togetherness of the Kansas team, with Justin Cross at the heart of it all.
