Jayhawks Coach Bill Self Hospitalized Before Crucial Colorado Road Game

Kansas coach Bill Selfs latest health-related absence sparks renewed attention to his ongoing medical journey and coaching resilience.

Kansas Head Coach Bill Self Hospitalized, Will Miss Upcoming Road Game at Colorado

Kansas men’s basketball will be without its longtime head coach when the Jayhawks head to Boulder this week. Bill Self was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital on Monday after feeling under the weather, according to a statement from KU Athletics. Out of caution, Self received IV fluids and did not travel with the team for its upcoming matchup against Colorado.

This marks another health-related absence for Self, who has navigated a handful of medical issues in recent years. Most notably, he was hospitalized in March 2023 after experiencing chest tightness and balance issues, which forced him to miss Kansas’ postseason run.

Then, in July 2025, Self had two stents inserted at Lawrence Memorial after what the university described as “concerning symptoms.” He was released just two days later and, by August, made it clear he had no plans to step away from coaching.

Instead, doctors advised him to make adjustments to his diet and exercise regimen.

Self’s health journey has been well-documented. Back in the fall of 2022, he underwent an aortic valve replacement and even coached a portion of a season with a PICC line. Through it all, he’s remained a constant on the Kansas sideline, now in his 23rd season leading the program and his 33rd overall as a head coach.

The university has not yet announced who will take over coaching duties when the Jayhawks face Colorado at the CU Events Center on Tuesday night. But for now, the focus is on Self’s recovery and well-being-something that resonates far beyond the hardwood.
