Kansas coach Lance Leipold didn’t have to wait long to react to Jalon Daniels’ latest football breakthrough. Once the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finalized their roster, Leipold sent the former Jayhawks quarterback a message to congratulate him on landing the No. 2 quarterback job behind Baker Mayfield.
Daniels, who went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, entered camp as a long shot just to survive the roster cuts. Instead, he climbed his way past veterans Jake Browning and Connor Bazelak and turned a precarious situation into a clear win: the backup role in Tampa Bay.
“We exchanged some texts early in the week, shortly after the rosters were announced,” Leipold said. “Extremely proud of him.
Again, what a story. Everything that young man has overcome, he has stayed positive.”
That reaction says plenty about the bond between coach and quarterback from Daniels’ time in Lawrence. Daniels became one of the most productive passers in Kansas history, finishing his college career second in school history in passing yards and helping spark one of the Jayhawks’ most memorable early-season runs in recent memory.
His path to the NFL wasn’t clean or predictable. After going undrafted, Daniels signed with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent and had to prove he belonged in a crowded quarterback room.

The preseason numbers backed up the rise. Daniels completed 27 of 44 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown, while also running for 37 yards and another score. That dual-threat production gave Tampa Bay a look at a quarterback who could create with both his arm and his legs.
Leipold also pointed to the way Daniels handled the journey.
“I think he’s such a great example for young men that, through the ups and downs of things, he’s stayed true to who he is and what he’s done,” Leipold said. “He’s been true to Kansas and his experiences here.”
For Kansas, Daniels’ move from undrafted prospect to NFL backup is another proud chapter for a player who made his mark in college and kept pushing when the road got bumpy.
