Houston Stuns Kansas With Game Plan Every Coach Needs to Study

Houston's strategic dismantling of Kansas showcases a blueprint for defensive excellence and relentless intensity.

Friday night’s matchup against the No. 2 Houston Cougars was a tough outing for the Jayhawks, ending in a 69-47 defeat that highlighted some glaring issues needing quick resolution.

From the jump, Kansas found themselves overwhelmed by Houston's relentless play. While some stats might suggest a closer contest, the energy and execution from Kelvin Sampson’s squad told a different story.

Kansas head coach Bill Self noted before the game, “I don't know if it'll be as much about scouting as it will be, who wants the ball more.” Throughout the game, it was clear KU lacked that desire.

This intensity is a hallmark of Sampson’s coaching, showcasing why he’s among the elite in college basketball. However, what Kansas can emulate is Houston’s tenacious defense, particularly against KU star Darryn Peterson.

Peterson, a standout talent, usually commands attention with his ability to score even when shots aren’t falling. His knack for getting to the line makes him a formidable threat.

But against Houston, he found it tough to create opportunities. Despite this, his smooth shooting still earned him a team-high 14 points.

Unfortunately, the Jayhawks struggled to find a reliable secondary scoring option to support him.

“They weren't going to let Darryn beat them,” Self remarked postgame. “They had two guys on him, dragging defenders to him.

He always felt guarded. They did a great job with that.”

Kansas’ offensive struggles are evident in the numbers. Averaging a 45.3% field goal rate, they rank 140th nationally, with 75.6 points per game placing them at 152nd. While not every opponent boasts Houston’s defensive prowess, it doesn’t take a coaching genius like Sampson to stifle KU’s offense.

The Jayhawks’ 118.4 offensive KenPom rating, ranking 57th in efficiency, underscores the need for significant improvement if they hope to finish the season strong.
