DeShawn Hanika Stuns Fans With Bold 2026 NFL Draft Decision

After a challenging college career marked by perseverance and growth, Kansas tight end DeShawn Hanika is taking the next step toward the NFL.

DeShawn Hanika’s road to the NFL hasn’t been easy-but it’s far from over.

The Kansas tight end, who saw his final college season cut short by injury, made it official this month: he’s declaring for the 2026 NFL Draft. It’s a move that reflects not just his talent, but his resilience.

After suffering a season-ending injury in 2024, Hanika made it clear he wasn’t done chasing his dream. Now, after a year of rehab, recovery, and reflection, he’s ready to take that next step.

In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Hanika thanked the people and programs that helped shape his journey-from his family and wife to the coaches who believed in him. He gave a nod to Butler Community College, where his college football story began, and to Iowa State, where he grew as a player and person. And of course, he showed gratitude to the University of Kansas and head coach Lance Leipold for investing in his development and giving him a stage to compete at the Power Five level.

“These last few years have been an absolute blessing,” Hanika wrote. “I am happy to announce that I’ll be declaring for the 2026 NFL Draft!”

It’s a testament to his perseverance. Hanika didn’t see the field in 2024 due to injury, but he bounced back to contribute in 2025.

He appeared in five games this past fall, finishing with 10 catches for 97 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those scores came in a rivalry clash against Missouri-a game that offered a glimpse of what Hanika might’ve done with a full, healthy season.

His final appearance came in late September against Cincinnati in Big 12 play, before injury once again sidelined him.

Still, the flashes were there. At 6-foot-6 with soft hands and a knack for finding the end zone, Hanika showed traits that NFL scouts look for in a modern tight end. His ability to create mismatches in the red zone and contribute as a reliable target in short-yardage situations makes him an intriguing prospect, especially if he can prove he’s fully recovered.

Hanika isn’t the only Jayhawk from the 2025 roster aiming for the pros. Wide receiver Levi Wentz, another redshirt senior, also declared for the draft this month. Quarterback Jalon Daniels and wideout Emmanuel Henderson Jr. are among the others making the leap, signaling a wave of KU talent heading to the next level.

For Hanika, the draft declaration is more than just a formality-it’s a statement of intent. He’s betting on himself, trusting the work he’s put in behind the scenes, and chasing the dream he refused to let go of, even when injuries tried to derail it.

The next few months will be critical. Workouts, interviews, pro days-Hanika will have chances to show teams he’s not just recovered, but ready. And if his journey so far is any indication, don’t count him out.
