Against all odds, DeShawn Hanika triumphantly represented Topeka at the KU pro day, showcasing resilience and determination just six months after surgery.

Hanika's Determination Shines at Kansas Pro Day

In the heart of Lawrence, DeShawn Hanika showcased his grit and determination at Kansas football's pro day. Despite an injury that cut short his final season with the Jayhawks, Hanika was undeterred. Six months post-surgery, the tight end defied expectations, proving that timetables are just guidelines meant to be exceeded.

For Hanika, participating in events like the NFL Combine or a college pro day has been a lifelong dream. He fondly recalls timing participants on TV with his dad as a child. Missing this opportunity was never an option, and he credits the KU training staff for getting him ready to compete.

“Once you’ve been through it as many times as I have, you get used to it,” Hanika shared. “There’s no one there to help you, so it’s on you.

I’ve had this dream since I was little. Nothing was going to stop me from getting here.”

Hanika's journey to KU included a transfer from Iowa State and a battle with injuries. He missed the 2024 season but started strong in 2025, notably against Missouri with six catches for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Despite setbacks, his motivation never wavered, driven by the desire to secure a bright future for his young family.

Family plays a significant role in Hanika’s life. His brother, Connor, is set to join the KU program in June, adding another layer of motivation. Hanika cherishes the supportive texts from his brother, who is eager to start his own journey with the Jayhawks.

Reflecting on his brother's decision to join KU, Hanika said, “He called me right after they left his school and said, ‘I’m coming to KU.’ I was like, ‘Hold on a minute, dude.

What do you mean?’ He was adamant, ‘I’ve seen you up there.

I’m coming.’ I’m excited for him.

I know he’s going to work hard.”

Hanika’s story is a testament to his perseverance and the supportive environment at Kansas under coach Lance Leipold. As Hanika continues to chase his dreams, he does so with a community and family firmly behind him.
