Kansas’ playbook got a little national airtime last Saturday, and the Jayhawks’ coaches didn’t mind one bit.
Indiana coach Curt Cignetti pointed to a fourth-and-1 play-action call from the Hoosiers’ win over Nebraska - a 44-yard touchdown that ended up being the difference - and said it had roots in a Kansas concept Andy Kotelnicki helped make famous. Cignetti described it as something Indiana had “stole[n]” years ago, and the moment turned into an unexpected nod to KU’s offensive creativity.
Kotelnicki took the compliment in stride.
“I don’t know, I might have stolen that from somebody else,” Kotelnicki said of the play Cignetti appropriated. “I can’t even remember when we first started running it.”
The play in question looked familiar because Kansas had used a similar look before, including a fourth-and-1 touchdown to Jared Casey against Texas Tech in Lubbock on Nov. 12, 2022.
On that snap, Jason Bean was at quarterback for the Jayhawks. Kansas later ran a similar idea again in the Illinois game in 2023, when Jalon Daniels threw a touchdown to Casey from 5 yards out.
Cignetti didn’t stop with the Nebraska example, either. He said Indiana had also used the concept against Northwestern, though it didn’t come together exactly as planned.
“Hit Northwestern on it, fourth-and-1 on the 1, but actually called the protection backwards,” he told reporters. “I mean, yeah, they covered the guy we thought would get the ball, and Nick flashed open, and Josh found him.”
That touchdown went to Nick Marsh, with quarterback Josh Hoover finding him after wide receiver Charlie Becker and tight end Brock Schott helped occupy the coverage. Marsh’s path to Indiana added another layer to the story for KU, which was a finalist for him in the summer of 2023 before he chose Michigan State and later transferred to Indiana.
Kotelnicki and Cignetti had crossed paths before, back when Kotelnicki was at Penn State.
“He obviously has done a great job, him and his staff,” Kotelnicki said. “When I played against them when I was at the other place (Penn State), we talked before the game, just briefly. Just mutual respect for guys who do a good job coaching ball.”
Lance Leipold, too, welcomed the recognition. He said he had heard last season that Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin was interested in Kansas’ third-and-short calls.
“Even though we always don’t agree (with) everything that’s always called here, I guess some people like some of the stuff we do call,” Leipold said with a slight smile. “But as we know, when they work, we all love them.”

Kansas Fans Now Know When The Biggest Early Showdowns Will Hit
Kansas basketball fans can now circle a few of the seasons earliest must-watch nights after the program released its television schedule for 2026-27. The slate includes exhibition games against Pitt State, Louisville and Duke, giving the Jayhawks a string of high-profile tuneups before the games start counting for real, while the broader schedule again figures to keep Kansas in the national spotlight.
The marquee matchups are already set for major network air time, including the Champions Classic meeting with Kentucky and the Players Era Tournament opener against UNLV. Add in the Big 12 games that will land on ESPN throughout the season, and Kansas is set up for a schedule packed with familiar stage lights, even if the exact rhythms of the year will still depend on how the rest of the calendar falls into place. Devin Neals NFL Fight Just Took Another Turn
Devin Neals pro career keeps taking an interesting route, and the latest stop came with Washington. The former Kansas running back, a 2025 sixth-round NFL Draft pick, signed with the Commanders practice squad after being released by the Vikings, continuing a stretch that has already included time with the Saints and Minnesota. Neal has not played this season because of injuries, so the new landing spot gives him another chance to get back into the mix and keep his NFL path moving.
Luke Grimm also found a new opportunity after leaving his original situation behind. The former Jayhawks wide receiver was added to the Chargers practice squad after being waived with an injury settlement, another reminder of how many Kansas alumni are trying to carve out roles at the next level. For Jayhawks fans, its a familiar kind of update: more movement, more roster churn, and still the hope that these names can turn practice-squad chances into something more lasting. [Read more 🡒]
Kansas Has No Room For Errors In Another Huge K-State Test
Kansas is heading into another Sunflower Showdown with a little more pressure than usual, and not much margin for error. The Jayhawks and Kansas State both enter with losing Big 12 records, which only sharpens the stakes for a rivalry game that already carries its own weight. Kansas will have to handle the road environment at Bill Snyder Family Stadium while trying to steady a season that still needs a clear signature win.
The bigger storyline, of course, is the long skid against the Wildcats. Kansas has dropped 17 straight in the series, a streak that hangs over this meeting no matter how much the records say both teams are searching for answers. With Fox Sports One carrying the game, the Jayhawks get another chance to change the tone of this rivalry and, at minimum, keep the pressure squarely on a Kansas State team that has not separated itself much in league play either.
