As the NCAA Tournament looms, Kansas head coach Bill Self is eyeing an opportunity for a fresh start despite the Jayhawks' recent struggles. A single victory could be the spark they need.
Kansas enters the tournament as a No. 4 seed, set to face California Baptist in San Diego on Friday. This follows a tough Big 12 semifinal loss to Houston, leaving the team searching for momentum.
“We’re not exactly on a hot streak,” Self admitted. Yet, he sees the tournament's timing as a chance to hit the reset button. “I actually like that it’s on Friday,” he noted, appreciating the extra day for practice.
Sunday was all about regrouping. The team dove into film study, contrasting their recent performances with earlier successes. “I thought we were great today,” Self said, highlighting the importance of revisiting past triumphs to boost morale.
Self emphasized the rejuvenating power of practice. “Whenever you don’t feel well, you always feel better after you practice,” he shared, underscoring how preparation can lift spirits.
Physical readiness is also key, especially for players like Melvin Council Jr., who have been logging heavy minutes. “We’re pushing him hard,” Self acknowledged, noting the toll the season has taken.
Now, Kansas turns its attention to California Baptist, a team making its NCAA Tournament debut. Experience, according to Self, isn’t the be-all and end-all. “It’s the first time for some of our guys too,” he pointed out, downplaying the advantage of tournament experience.
Instead, Self highlighted the competitive balance in this year’s bracket. “Three, four, five, six seeds seem closer than ever,” he observed, signaling a wide-open field.
Despite recent ups and downs, Self remains optimistic about the potential for a quick turnaround. “One win in the NCAA Tournament can change everything from a momentum standpoint,” he emphasized, knowing how pivotal that first victory can be.
