The Houston Astros needed Thursday’s game, and they played like it.

He has allowed 23 home runs this season, though he had given up only four over his previous 11 starts spanning 59 and 1/3 innings.
Kansas City, already eliminated from postseason contention after Wednesday’s 5-2 win over Houston, didn’t get much going against a bullpen game. The Royals put three baserunners on in the first inning against opener Miguel Ullola, but Maikel Garcia grounded into a double play to end the threat. Kansas City scored once in the frame, then didn’t get another hit until the sixth.
That’s when rookie catcher Carter Jensen singled and finished 2 for 3. Jensen also picked up his 75th RBI of the season. Before Thursday, he ranked first among all rookies in extra-base hits and doubles.
Houston’s bullpen handled the rest, with bulk reliever Ethan Pecko giving up one run over 5 and 2/3 innings. The win pushed the Astros to 77-76, while the Royals dropped to 67-86 and have now lost four of six on their current nine-game road trip.
