Kansas City Royals Urban Youth Academy: A Home Opener Celebration
In the heart of Kansas City, the Royals Urban Youth Academy (UYA) is gearing up to celebrate the Royals' home opener. Since its inception in 2018, the UYA has become a beacon for young baseball and softball enthusiasts, providing a safe and nurturing environment for kids and teens to immerse themselves in the sport and other enriching programs. This initiative, backed by the Royals, is one of only eight such academies nationwide, highlighting the team's commitment to community development.
The academy extends a welcoming hand to children aged 5-18, offering athletic, academic, and social opportunities entirely free of charge. This means that whether a child needs a bat, glove, or any other equipment, the UYA is ready to assist, ensuring that financial barriers don't hinder participation.
"Our kiddos are excited to attend games," shared Donease Smith, the executive director of the UYA. "For many, this will be their first time experiencing the thrill of a Royals game at Kauffman Stadium, and we’re thrilled to provide tickets at no cost."
Nestled right off 18th and Vine, the UYA boasts a state-of-the-art, 42,000-square-foot facility. It features an MLB-sized turf infield, two full-size baseball fields, a youth baseball field, a softball outdoor field, a press box, four batting tunnels, three classrooms, a weight room, and an athletic training room. This comprehensive setup not only supports sports development but also fosters educational growth, making it a cornerstone of the community.
As the Royals prepare for their home opener, the UYA stands as a testament to the power of sports in transforming lives, offering young athletes a chance to dream big and play even bigger.
