Craig Kimbrel’s night took a strange turn Thursday at Kauffman Stadium, and the broadcast booth didn’t exactly handle it with textbook timing.
During the Royals’ 7-3 win over the Marlins, the veteran reliever got sick on the mound. Kansas City later described it as nausea, but the scene was plain enough for everyone watching: Kimbrel vomited on the mound. While he was collecting himself, some Royals players were even seen smiling.
“There was definitely something that came out of his mouth,” Royals broadcaster Jake Eisenberg helpfully noted.
Kimbrel then stayed in long enough to throw one pitch, which drilled Miami’s Kyle Stowers in the foot. Royals manager Matt Quatraro pulled him after that.
“He said he felt way better after (puking), just like everybody does usually when they throw up, they feel a little better after,” Quatraro told reporters after the game. “But we’re not all trying to get major-league hitters out right after we throw up, so we got him out of there.”
The Marlins’ broadcast added its own odd layer to the moment with a split screen that showed Kimbrel vomiting on one side and a law firm commercial on the other. Once the ad finished, the camera went to Stowers.
“Well, we are not going to show you Craig Kimbrel because it is so hot outside, he is very, very sick on the mound right now,” one Marlins broadcaster said.
That line didn’t last long before the feed swung right back to Kimbrel.
“Give him a little bit of privacy here,” the play-by-play broadcaster said. “After he struck out (Heriberto) Hernández, he walked to the back of the mound and just started puking.”
