The New York Mets got three runs out of a ball that barely made it out of the infield Tuesday night, and the Kansas City Royals had only themselves to blame.
In the first inning at Citi Field, Carson Benge chopped a comebacker that turned into a full-blown defensive breakdown. What should have been a routine play became a three-error sequence for Kansas City, and the Mets cashed in immediately.
With two on and two outs, Benge sent the ball toward the area between the mound and third base. Seth Lugo got to it first, but his hurried throw to first sailed past Jac Caglianone’s glove and into foul territory. That let the first run cross.
By then, the runners had already stopped at second and third. Caglianone then fired home with a throw so wild it nearly reached the visiting dugout, and Bo Bichette came in to score while Benge advanced to third.
Nick Loftin tried to clean up the mess by throwing to the plate, but his throw arrived late and skipped past Carter Jensen, allowing Benge to complete his trip around the bases.
The play was officially scored as a single with an E1, E3 and E5 on Kansas City’s throws.
It was only the second time in the last decade that a team has committed three errors on one play, according to Elias Sports Bureau. The only other instance came last September, when the Marlins did it in the second inning of a 2-0 loss to the Tigers.
The Royals and Mets entered the opener of their series on Tuesday with the second-worst records in their respective leagues. The clubs also met in the 2015 World Series.
